Grade 4-7-When 10-year-old Bud Caldwell runs away from his new foster home, he realizes he has nowhere to go but to search for the father he has never known: a legendary jazz musician advertised on some old posters his deceased mother had kept. A friendly stranger picks him up on the road in the middle of the night and deposits him in Grand Rapids, MI, with Herman E. Calloway and his jazz band, but the man Bud was convinced was his father turns out to be old, cold, and cantankerous. Luckily, the band members are more welcoming; they take him in, put him to work, and begin to teach him to play an instrument. In a Victorian ending, Bud uses the rocks he has treasured from his childhood to prove his surprising relationship with Mr. Calloway. The lively humor contrasts with the grim details of the Depression-era setting and the particular difficulties faced by African Americans at that time. Bud is a plucky, engaging protagonist. Other characters are exaggerations: the good ones (the librarian and Pullman car porter who help him on his journey and the band members who embrace him) are totally open and supportive, while the villainous foster family finds particularly imaginative ways to torture their charge. However, readers will be so caught up in the adventure that they won't mind. Curtis has given a fresh, new look to a traditional orphan-finds-a-home story that would be a crackerjack read-aloud.

Very good!

I bought this for a summer reading project for a 10 year old student who is a little behind on her reading level. I, of course, read it first. It was great! I'm not sure if it was my pregnancy hormones or the fact that I fell in love with Buddy and his story, but I cried at the end. I cannot wait for my student to read it to get her perspective, and I'll definitely be adding it to my daughter's reading collection when she is older.

Great read for all ages and stages- don't miss it!

What a treat! We read this together as a family and laughed and cried while I tried to recall stories of my grandparents too. We bought it to read as preparation for the performance of the show-- but only have one ticket...so my daughter is going. Still, it's such a good read, don't miss it! I'm fairly conservative home schooling mom but this gets dialog going and lets kids think about life in new ways- and be grateful for the smallest blessings we take for granted.

This is a good book for reading aloud as a family: the book is verbally rich, with wonderful explorations of the senses, particularly the descriptions of library smells, and restaurant smells, and the sounds of jazz. It also has laugh-out-loud scenes (especially the misunderstanding about VAMPIRES!) and wonderful characters.
This book is amazingly funny and creative. It is a pleasure to read a book that shows a child drawing on inner strength and character to get through really bad situations. This book has wonderful things to say about the sustaining power of a parent's love and the camaraderie of gentle humor and teasing. Bud's "Rules and Things" are right on target and show the perceptiveness of kids.
So why three stars? The expectation in this book is that foster families and adoptive families will mistreat and abuse the children. What a shame. No wonder Newbery picked it -- the Newbery group seems to have an unstated goal of disparaging families and driving out trust between children and adults. While reading it out loud together is a great way to build your family, I wouldn't want to just shunt this book to a child (ESPECIALLY a kid in a blended family, stepfamily, adoptive family, or foster family) and hope for the best. Bud, not Buddy KNOWS that going to a foster home means he is going to be abused and mistreated. And he IS mistreated, big time.
No bad language. Strongly pro-labor-union. Illegitimacy is a major plot driver. Habitual lying to adults as a survival mechanism. Almost no racial content. Just Bud, not Buddy, a regular kid during a tough time.
