Slow start

This book starts slow, but it is well the wait. I started to read and thought that I wasn't going to be interested. I am thrilled that I stuck it out. I started crying and then wanted to cheer for the heroine. I didn't want it to end and I can't wait for sequels to this book.

I'm a new comer to Virginia Henley and love her books. Desired is the 3rd book Of Virginia's that I've read. I found I couldn't put it down. I've read many historical romances and find that she puts some things in hers that is always a surprise. One scene in this story, Christian is fantasizing about Brianna....and well...let's just say that Virginia is VERY creative....and let's face it...if your into historical romances you've read it all. She proved me wrong when I thought no historical author could suprise me.

What is Pure Awareness?

I've listened to other works by Reggie such as Breathing Body and Mahamudra for the Modern World (which I absolutely recommend). So I was very excited for this series, especially due to the title "Pure Awareness", which suggested to me that this was going to be a kind of next step from the Mahamudra series. By that I mean that I thought it would be in the Dzogchen realm which is a true pure awareness practice from my experience.

Reggie seemed to go down the Trekcho road with a couple of intsructions that made me think this was definitely Dzogchen...but didn't expound upon them as much as would have liked him to. There was no real explanation in my opinion for some of the most important aspects of instruction.

The same could be said for the "energy work" that is described,specifically the central channel stuff. Towards the end of each guided meditation I felt as if he was leaving out the most important parts. I was left hanging.

Reggie gives several amazing pointers that were really eye openers for me. Not in a sense that it was something I hadn't heard before, but in a way that he helped me understand its significance in such a way that I hadn't realized. it surely has changed my practice for the better. Furthermore, the dharma talks he gives are always unbelievably valuable. At one point my whole body was in wave after wave of intense goosebumps. Very powerful.

In conclusion, I did not feel this was a practice of pure awareness in its purest form. Maybe I missed something. I would love to have a Q and A session with Reggie to clear up any confusion on my part. I'm sure other students would appreciate the clarification. I don't want to go into too many details here because of the technical intricacies involved but it is important stuff I think.

As always, wonderful cds from Reggie Ray. A continuation of Mahamudra, the practice of Pure Awareness is the pinnacle of Tibetan Buddhist meditation. I would recommend doing Mahamudra For the Modern World first. Just a great addition to Reggie Ray's teachings. For those of us who follow the Dharma on our own, without access to teachers, these cds are profound and indepth teachings. I can't thank Mr. Ray enough!

Genius. This translation of Attars classic book, "The Conference of the Birds," by Sholeh Wolp� is beautiful. The images and meditations are heart wrenching and poignant. Thank you, Sholeh Wolp� for translating a version of Attar's classic work that is as intelligent as it is beautiful, and that flows from the page as if it were written solely for the English reader. This book, as good as it is, leaves me in a state of awe, wondering how gorgeous the version written in Farsi must be, yet overwhelmingly content with the version that I have just read. Thank you for taking on this project and making it one of the best translations I've ever read. And thank you for shining a spotlight on the Iranian literary tradition, something that is especially important right now.

Very thorough, informative, accessible work about Guiana

Before I review this book, I should say that I am a student of French history who is particularly interested in the French colonization process in the Caribbean and South America. Consequently, the prison colony in Guiana has come to my attention.

After reading the book twice I've decided that I disagree with the other reviewers. No, this is not a sequel to or revision of the 1934 work about the Dreyfus affair, in response to another reviewer's question. Miles's work is a more all-encompassing one that includes information about the voyage from France to Guiana, the reasons why the convicts were sent there (among others) and the conditions within the colony. The work also explores the psychology of the French government and its motivations in attempting to keep the colony alive.

I think what turns off some readers is the fact that this book is not academic. Don't get me wrong, Miles's research is very thorough, and contrary to what the other reviewers have claimed, there is a very long bibliography in the back of the book where all his information can be found. Miles's language is far from sophisticated, and I did notice a couple of grammar errors, but who cares? The book gets across its message in a clear, accessible, ENTERTAINING manner, which a more academic, sophisticated work may not be able to as effectively. I have always enjoyed entertaining histories, and so do most people, considering the types of history books that sell en masse.

All things considered, I think it's only fair to give this book four stars. I was truly entertained by this book, and it did a great job of opening my eyes. Miles obviously put an enormous effort into it and I believe I succeeded. I also appreciate the photographs of the penal colony, prisoners, and other penal memorabilia. This book is easily worth the money, or at least a trip to the library.

Not a good effort

This book is a disappointment. It is not a serious work of scholorship. It has no notes, no index and is written in a rather breathless style that involves lots of exclamation marks and purported quotations of conversations that took place 75 years ago. The work also lacks structure and needed a good editor.
Save your money.

The fact that they were making little or no progress in overcoming the errors of the city, greatly affected my mind.
I gave myself to a great deal of prayer. After my evening services, I would retire as early as I well could; but rose up at four O'clock in the morning, because I could sleep no longer, and immediately went to the study, and engaged in prayer. And so deeply was my mind exercised, and so absorbed in prayer, that I frequently continued from the time I arose at four O'clock, till the gong called to breakfast, at eight O'clock. My days were spent, so far as I could get time—for I had a great deal of company coming constantly to see me—in searching the Scriptures. I read nothing else, all that winter, but my Bible; and a great deal of it seemed new to me. Again the Lord took me, as it were, from Genesis to Revelation. He led me to see the connection of things—how things predicted in the Old Testament had come out in the New Testament—the promises, threatenings, the prophecies and their fulfillment;—and indeed, the whole Scripture seemed to me all ablaze with light, and not only light, but it seemed as if God's Word was instinct with the very life of God.

A great urban fantasy read!

Loved this book. I wish the books weren't so short :)
I am really growing to love this series. I like all the characters personalities and how they mesh together. Emma has made an urban fantasy world that is full of supernatural beings. I might be a little in love with Josh :) I look forward to reading the next book.

AWESOME!!!!! She does it again they just keep getting better and better. This series is making its way to the top of my top 10 favorite books. If she keeps it up I am going to be depressed when this series is over.
