A book to refer back to again and again!

I can not say enough positive things about this outstanding book. As a child therapist, who works with many children in the foster care system and increasing numbers of adopted children, Theraplay has become the single most important tool in my repertoire of therapy modalities. It is very exciting to find a method of working with children that offers practical and impactful strategies to try, which are very different from what you may already be doing. I have also attended the Theraplay trainings at the Theraplay Institute in Chicago and am near completion of the Theraplay Certification process. Even if I am not using Theraplay with a particular child, the foundation and understanding of attachment that this model has given me pervade my work. Parents of children that I am using Theraplay with often report dramatic progress in their child's behavior and attachment to them in a short period of time. One father of an internationally adopted child that I am using Theraplay with said it best. He stated, "We finally came to realize that our child was not going to be able to fully benefit from all the supportive services we were taking him to (including occupational therapy, speech therapy, and physical therapy) until he was able to form an attachment with us. Theraplay has allowed that attachment to form and we are now seeing much more progress in other areas of development."
The model of using parents as co-therapists, as presented in the book, is very empowering to parents and the parents I use Theraplay with have many positive comments to say about this. One foster/adoptive mother recently told me she thinks that every foster or adoptive parent should be required to learn Theraplay. She adds "It has given me a whole new understanding of my adopted children and their needs."
Theraplay is not only useful for children with attachment and bonding difficulties, but I have found it particularly useful for children diagnosed with ADHD and Oppositional Defiant Disorder. This is a comprehensive book that you will refer back to again and again.

Great book for foster parents

The book is written for professionals (social workers/psychologists) but as a foster parent I found the book well laid out and full of great, practical activities to foster bonding. The vignettes were enlightening and reaffirmed the importance of that special attachment.

Prolific author Peter Gay describes the rise of the middle class in the 19th century through an unexpected lens: the life of Viennese playwright Arthur Schnitzler. Yet Gay's themes are much larger than the somewhat obscure Schnitzler: "If we may call [my book] a biography at all, it is one of a class," he writes. Schnitzler's Century necessarily focuses on the Victorians--a term often applied only to the British, but here extended to all of Europe and the United States--and Gay seeks to portray them in their complexity and diversity. "There are many people who think they have grasped the Victorian mentality when they have smiled at gushy keepsakes, maudlin poems, shy euphemisms, silences about matters that matter," he writes. In fact, "they lived with their eyes open." Gay has written a history of habits, with close attention paid to sexual ones. It is the sort of provocative book that the stereotypical Victorian would want to see removed from the storefront window--but also would want to peek at when nobody else was looking. --John Miller

Though distinguished historian Gay declares in the preface that his new work is not "merely a Reader's Digest condensation of the bulky texts that preceded it," readers of his five-volume study, The Bourgeois Experience: Victoria to Freud, will find most of the material decidedly familiar. As in the series' first book, Education of the Senses, he argues here that the Victorian middle classes were much less inhibited about sex than modern stereotypes suggest. As in the last, Pleasure Wars, he finds that bourgeois philistinism has been vastly overstated and that there were plenty of respectable patrons for avant-garde art and music. Indeed, as Gay admits, some of the actual examples here are drawn from his former work. So what's new? Interweaving incidents from the life of Austrian playwright and novelist Arthur Schnitzler, "sometimes briefly as an impetus to broader investigations, sometimes as a participant," Gay begins his main text with Schnitzler's father breaking into the 16-year-old's locked desk to find, and vehemently reproach Arthur for, a diary indiscreetly recording the boy's erotic exploits; he closes with the diary's August 5, 1914, entry about the "dreadful and monstrous news" of WWI's outbreak. In between, the incident with Schnitzler's diary turns up several more times: as a demonstration of conflicted bourgeois notions about privacy, as an illustration of more lenient treatment of children (Dr. Schnitzler lectured his son, but didn't beat him). As is always the case with Gay, the prose is graceful, the insights solid, the specific examples vivid and illuminating. Fellow historians and longtime readers will feel (correctly) that the author really isn't saying anything he hasn't said before; for those who lack the stamina for The Bourgeois Experience, this is an agreeable one-volume summary with some additional nuance. Draining His Coffers Dry...

"Schnitzler's Century" is an engagingly written guided tour of the mental worlds of the late-nineteenth century European classes. As traced out over five previous volumes by the historian Peter Gay (b. 1923), the book argues that us Moderns have completely misunderstood our Victorian predecessors: they were neither as repressed nor as religious nor, frankly, as dull as their historical reputations have led us to believe. "Schnitzler's Century," despite Gay's claims in his introduction, is essentially a synthesis and considerable condensation of his five-volume work and, while making slight adjustments for then-recent scholarship (the book came out in 2002), tells fundamentally the same story. Gay, who also wrote a masterly biography of Freud, is at his most animated when discussing how much more varied and open were Victorian sexual habits than previously thought - it even creeps into chapters that address such other subjects as violence and anxiety. Other chapters really describe facets of nineteenth-century life that have, by now, been well integrated into common historical understanding: we know a lot more about home life and middle-class patronage of the arts, for example, than was appreciated when Gay started his project on the European bourgeoisie in the 1970s.

So, the book's a bit old hat. To rework his favorite anecdote, his coffers are draining dry - the narrative flows alright but the book lacks a lot of interpretative juice. Even more, in my view, he shortchanges his eponymous subject, the Austrian writer, Arthur Schnitzler. He doesn't particularly delve into Schnitzler's life and, especially, his work in any great detail and, more annoyingly, tries to read an excessive amount of significance into a fairly minor event in his life. Indeed, one gets the uncomfortable feeling - especially from an historian of Gay's stature (with many masterpieces to his credit, one must add) - that the Schnitzler angle was incorporated to make the book marketable (there was a brief Schnitzler vogue at the beginning of the 2000s). As a way of introducing the broad array of middle-class attitudes, Schnitzler's life doesn't always fit his schema particularly well - except, of course, in the matter of sex, sex, sex. So one finishes not convinced that the nineteenth-century was "Schnitzler's Century"; if anything, Schnitzler's writings, I'd argue, pointed toward the twentieth. While the Victorians were certainly much more complicated than their historical reputation, Schnitzler and Freud were charting exciting and frightening new territories in the unconsciousness, not validating the prejudices of the older generations.

The book is certainly worthwhile if you have a passing interest in the European middle-classes at their moment of greatest cultural influence and his anecdotes are often revealing and witty. He does amass a large cast of interesting characters. But it's also the work of a historian with precious little left to prove and the experience of reading "Schnitzler's Century" is a lot like hearing your beloved great uncle regale you with stories of the olden days. It's an enjoyable collection of people and stories - a nice popular history - but you're not likely to remember much of it afterward.

Biography as History, History as Biography

Peter Gay's choice of Arthur Schnitlzer is an interesting one. After all when we think of Victorian literary figures we usually think of the essayists Carlyle, Ruskin, Arnold; poets Tennyson and Browning; and novelist Dickens. "Schnitlzer" is not a name that readily comes to mind to most readers when speaking of the Victorians. He wrote plays and stories and novels which are rarely read today but Gay is not really interested in taking a measure of Schnitzlers literary achievements. What interests Gay about the Viennese author is not his official output but his private output as Schnitlzer kept extensive diaries. For Gay these diaires offer a glimpse into the private life of the Victorian. Gay quotes liberally from Schnitzlers diaries because after all its the unofficial history of the Victorians that Gay is really interested in. We are all familiar with the public record of the time and the cliches about the Victorian mind set but Gay wants to peel back those cliches and have a look at the Victorian with his gaurd down -- he wants to tell us what the middle-class Victorians really thought and how they really behaved. The diary gives Gay access to the private mind and conscience behind the Victorian facade. One of Gay's points is that there is no typical "Victorian" really and that the much disparaged middle-class is really a much more diversified and conflicted group than many historians would lead you to believe. Schnitzler is not exactly a representative Victorian. In many ways he is a figure (roughly contemporary with Freud) who tells us more about the century to come than the one he was born into. Like Freud he is concerned less with the general goings-on within society than he is with the goings-on within his own and his characters minds -- their hidden motivations etc.....
Schnitzler's mind appeals to Gay because Gay himself is a Freudian and his history is an attempt to reveal the hidden motivations(anxieties , fears, aggressions, desires) driving the age. Gay is a consummate historian however and he never lets his Freudian interests lead him into speculative corners -- he supports every point with lively data and convincingly shows us that the Victorians are a largely misunderstood people. We assume they were overly shy about sex but Gay gathers plenty of evidence to counter this assumption. Schnitlzer himself seems to have thought of little else as he moved from one conquest to another. Whether we are to assume that Schnitzler is a typical Victorian or not seems to be beside the point because what Gay wants us to see is that any generalization that we make about the Victorians will quickly be undone by evidence to the contrary. This is not a "biography" of Schnitzler and it is not a typical "history" of the Victorians or middle-class. Rather this is an interdisciplinary work which blends biography and history. Schnitzler's Century uses one discipline to challenge the other and in so doing offers fresh insight into both.
In addition to "sex" two other topics are given extensive consideration: the "gospel" of work, and religion.

Victorians Unmasked

The title is misleading: Schnitzler lived from 1861 to 1931; The book covers the period from 1815 to 1914. The author uses the life of Schnitzler as a hook on which to hang his tales of the Victorian bourgeoisie.
Mr. Gay discusses the moral atmosphere during the 19th century and shows us that the bourgeoisie was not as constipated as they are claimed to be. Next he discusses the Victorian family, their religious habits as well as their culture and work. Shaping the century is the fact that it was relatively free of wars and thus gave people a chance to better themselves in peaceful times. But probably the most important factor was the arrival of the industrial age. The railroads not only created riches for some bourgeois, but enabled the speedy transport of goods, just as the telegraph cut down on the transmittal time of news. Especially the second half of the 19th century was a time of upheaval, with people trying to find their place in a rapidly changing environment. This continued long into the 20thh century before it settled down to a more comfortable pace.
Mr. Gay had previously written a five-volume explanation of the bourgeois experience in the 19th century. I must assume that his research for such a massive undertaking served as the basis of the present book. Unfortunately, too many authors recycle their leftover research. That is definitely not the case here. The writing is fresh and of new interest.

About the Author
John Milton, English scholar and classical poet, is one of the major figures of Western literature. He was born in 1608 into a prosperous London family. By the age of 17, he was proficient in Latin, Greek, and Hebrew. Milton attended Cambridge University, earning a B.A. and an M.A. before secluding himself for five years to read, write and study on his own. It is believed that Milton read evertything that had been published in Latin, Greek, and English. He was considered one of the most educated men of his time. Milton also had a reputation as a radical. After his own wife left him early in their marriage, Milton published an unpopular treatise supporting divorce in the case of incompatibility. Milton was also a vocal supporter of Oliver Cromwell and worked for him. Milton's first work, Lycidas, an elegy on the death of a classmate, was published in 1632, and he had numerous works published in the ensuing years, including Pastoral and Areopagitica. His Christian epic poem, Paradise Lost, which traced humanity's fall from divine grace, appeared in 1667, assuring his place as one of the finest non-dramatic poet of the Renaissance Age. Milton went blind at the age of 43 from the incredible strain he placed on his eyes. Amazingly, Paradise Lost and his other major works, Paradise Regained and Samson Agonistes, were composed after the lost of his sight. These major works were painstakingly and slowly dictated to secretaries. John Milton died in 1674.

Some value, within a lot of poor content

The reason I bought this Max Notes is the same for my (probable) frequent mispelling in the text that follows: I'm not a native English speaker. I wanted to know Milton's work, without having to fight my way through a poetry that's difficult even to well educated, native English speakers. I suspected that the difficulties of the style would hinder my appreciation of the work (which I still think would be the case).
This is a good summary of Milton's work: engaging, informed and synthetic, at the same time. Each "book" (actualy chapters) of Paradise Lost is presented separately, in five sections: the new characters (who make their debut in that chapter; a good idea), the summary of the chapter/book, an analysis of the chapter, study questions along with their answers, and suggested essay topics.
Two things, though, compromise the quality of the book.
First, the quality of the "analysis" of each chapter is very, very poor. Most of the time it basicaly re-summarizes the text, in the very same way a laisy student -- who's unwilling to stop and think -- does in an test. This, plus the fact that the study questions and answers are also very superficial and poor, give the impression that the book is specifically geared toward less-than-bright students. Is this the case? We might think so, once this is the general pre-conceivement about "notes" and "summaries" of great classics. But I really guess it didn't have to be this way.
The second weakness in this Max Noter is the horrendous, despisable, quality of its illustrations. Once again, we can't help but think that they were "commissioned" to resemble the drawings teenagers usually make in their notebooks. Then again, what's the use of that? Do teenager readers find the book "cooler" because of these cheesy, ridiculous illustrations. I seriously doubt.
All in all this is not a complete waste of time and money, but I do get the sensation that there might be a better summary among the many other similar series available.

Board Stiff 3 oral board review

Excellent book, well written, good scenarios. Would still recommend oral board review course, but this is a great start, as is Board Stiff Too. Have heard great things about Dr. HO's oral board review, but have not attended one yet. Also know that Dr. Gallagher has a live oral board review course, but no information on the quality. Have to think, based on his books, that the live course would also be very well done.
Dr. Gallgher has authored/co-arthured several anesthesiology books. I don't have the first Board Stiff book, but I do have Board Stiff Too and Board Stiff Three. Both are excellent; very informative, great suggestions and considerations for study, and simultaneously entertaining.
Board Stiff Three has a DVD as well. Laughing out loud as you study actually helps me retain the information. Highly recommend this book and anything by this author (Chris Gallagher). Dr. Gallagher is an attending anesthesiologist at a highly respected program. I've heard he has been "Teacher of the Year." I wonder if Dr. Gallagher is as terrific in person, as in print.

A must have for Anesthesia Oral Boards!

It took me more than 1-2 attempts at Oral boards to find out about this book and it's unbelievable value. Anybody who is preparing for orals have to review this book a few times. Don't be fooled by its simplistic approach. It is very practical. I tried other "famous" oral board reveiw courses and after passing the Orals believe Board stiff's approach is THE way to go! I also took Board stiff live and recommend it to everyone. Again, having been to other "famous" courses, BSL was THE best...

Gallagher is fun but book is shoddy

While I enjoy Gallagher's great sense of humor, the book itself is the bigger joke. Entire chapters are copied and pasted from handouts the author makes for residents without any editing whatsoever. And this is the third edition. I can't imagine how slipshod the first edition must have looked. The example answers submitted by his contributors do everything wrong. Rather then properly edit them into helpful examples, the author just adds asides that say, "Don't do it like this." Seriously? One sample board response included text lifted from 6 different papers. Most of the cases are ridiculous and the explanations are even worse, though they are fun to read. The last third of the book is difficult cases without explanations. I wish I'd bought something else. If a new CA1's wrote an oral board review book and self-published it in his/her garage, it would be better than this.

This book on Bontecou's work is amazing.
It allows the work to speak for itself with large, color images and Bontecou's work defies definition... And triggers the imagination. If the cover intrigues you the book will dazzle.

Lee Bontecou is a force. Her sculptural prowess is nearly unmatched. this work has some of the best critical essays I have ever read, and the bountiful photographs are most excellent.

Catalog is a Wonderful Companion to the Exhibition

It is difficult to review the exhibition catalog without first taking in the Lee Bontecou survey at one of the museum exhibitions currently traveling the US. Unfortunately the exhibition will travel to only three museums in the three largest cities in the US, yet most of the works come from public and private collections throughout the country. Luckily, readers get to see all of the pieces in a carefully written, scholarly book full of full-color reproductions, several essays about the artist and her process, essays about the artist and surrounding influences from (and in) art history, and a detailed exhibition checklist with thumbnail photos of each work in the full exhibition. There are over 150 works in the traveling exhibition presented in a catalog of 240 pages. The photographs are standard for a catalog presentation but photographs of the sculptural works may not give accurate renderings of scale or detail; once again, this is a catalog and not a coffee table book of a few of the artist's better-known works. For just a few dollars more than the softcover, get the hardbound edition; you will want to keep this book for a lifetime.

My sneakers hit the pavement and my heart slams like the truck door behind me.
"Watch it!" My cousin and best friend Erick hops out of the drivers' side, reprimanding me at the same time. Sensitive about his truck.
"Sorry," I mutter.�
The dim, enclosed parking garage puts me on edge. It's a perfect place for vampires. But it's early afternoon, not their prime hunting time.
The upscale Austin, Texas, mall parking lot is packed with sedans and trucks.�
I sling a motorcycle helmet into the bed of the truck, where it joins the massive four-wheeler we just spent an exhilarating morning breaking in. A gift for his eighteenth birthday a couple of months ago.�
For my eighteenth, I'm getting a night of torture. Mom-style.
"I can't believe you're making me do this." Erick stuffs his hands in his pockets as we walk toward the mall entrance.
His jeans and t-shirt are mud-splattered, and when I look down, mine haven't fared any better. I run a hand over my hair and discover most of it has come loose from the long braid down my back.�
Thank goodness�she�isn't here to see. And Sunday afternoon traffic at the mall is light.
"I can't believe�my mom�is making me do this," I grumble.
He's heard it all before, how I can't stand the thought of going through a cotillion, a big debutante ball to-do for my birthday party. I'd rather be focusing on my martial arts, but my mom insists. Until I turn eighteen, I have to bow to her wishes, including not fighting.
But on Sunday, the day after my birthday, I'll be hunting.
Seven more days until freedom.
For today, Erick and I have to pick out my dress. I think mom knew better than to join me. Ending up in a blowout fight in such a public place would probably ruin her rep with her ritzy friends.�
"Let's get this over with." Surely it won't take long to find something gaudy enough for my mother.
Twenty minutes later, I'm staring at myself in the mirrors surrounding me, the horror I feel reflected on my face. In triplicate.
"It doesn't fit right. Just like all the rest." This is the fifth one.
I know why, even if Erick and the sales lady helping us are too polite to say anything. I'm too flat up top, too tall, and too skinny to pull off any of these formal gowns.
On the other hand, the gowns with strapless or spaghetti straps show off my biceps nicely. Too bad I can't have a�kama--a traditional Filipino weapon, looks like a scythe--as an accessory. But my mom seems to want to forget the weapons part of our family tradition and focus only on this big party.�
"Maybe something knee-length..." the sales lady murmurs, hurrying away from the dressing room.
Take me with you!�I shout silently.
Behind me in the mirror, Erick plays on his smartphone.
I snap my fingers and he looks up; our eyes meet in the mirror. "Is it too much to ask for you to actually look at the dresses?"
He shrugs. "I'm not a chick. You should've asked a girl along if you wanted a commentary on color and frills."
But he knows I don't have any real girlfriends, so I'm not surprised when he puts the phone down next to his thigh and leans forward on his elbows. "It's not�that�bad."
I snort at his blatant lie.�
He crosses his eyes in the mirror at me.�
I stick my tongue out, and it's almost like we're in sixth grade again. Back when everything was easy. Back when my dad was alive.
"I wish I were your sister."
He rolls his eyes. "If you think my dad would let you out of having a debutante, you're crazy."
"At least he'd let me�Chase."
Our eyes meet again in the mirror, serious this time. It's something that's always there in the back of our minds... the vampires we were born to destroy.�
My mom married into a Chaser family, but I don't think she really understood what it meant until after my dad died. In our branch of the family tree, I'm the only one who can carry on the legacy. I can't just let it die, not when it's something I've been born to do. Someone has to step up and protect the humans.
Even if it means she and I part ways after this shindig. I haven't exactly told her my plan, though.
"Try this one." The sales lady bustles back into the dressing area and shoves a pile of magenta fabric into my arms. She pushes me off the carpeted block in front of the mirrors toward the changing rooms.
I'm pulling the dress over my head, wobbling in the unfamiliar high heels the saleslady forced on me earlier, when I hear another male voice join Erick's outside the curtain. I don't pay much attention to it. It's probably another guy here to help his girlfriend find a prom dress. Acting the contortionist to zip the side zipper takes enough concentration. This dress feels like it hugs in all the right places, but there isn't a mirror in this closet-like space, so I push aside the curtain...
And freeze on the threshold.�
Erick isn't alone, and the guy with him is possibly the last person on earth I want to see.

An irrational burst of heat fills my neck and cheeks as Brett's bright blue eyes lock on mine. His shock of short brown hair is as unwelcome as the rest of him. His usual cowboy hat is missing, though the boots are there beneath his jeans.
He wolf whistles and curses softly as his gaze travels the length of my body.
"What are you doing here?" I bark, because I'm pretty sure he's mocking me. I don't trust anything about Brett, not since his betrayal two years ago.
Trying to ignore the hot feeling of his gaze, I march to the block and hop up, examining every minute detail of the dress.
"I was in the neighborhood," he says.
Over my shoulder in the mirror, I see a flash of white teeth against his tanned skin, but I don't respond to his remark.
Erick is suspiciously silent. If my cousin had anything to do with Brett showing up, I'll beat it out of him later.
The sales clerk moves close and tugs at my bodice. "This one fits much better, dear. Makes it look like you've got something up here after all."
The heat in my face intensifies. I don't have any illusions about my attractiveness to the opposite sex, not with my build, but she didn't have to point that out in front of Brett, did she?
"And it makes your legs look great."�
My eyes dart to Brett's in the mirror and our gazes collide. Did he really just say that?
Erick clears his throat and I blink, breaking the connection, but the sudden roiling in my stomach remains.
"Can we get it and go?" my cousin mutters, shifting his feet.
"Fine," I agree.�
The sales clerk motions me to turn around. "Lift your arms, dear. There's a bit of extra fabric here..." She pinches a fingerful of purple beneath my armpits. "We've got a seamstress on staff who can fix this for you in a couple of days. It'll be a perfect fit."
"That's fine. Thanks," I grudgingly say, because it isn't her fault I've got to have the dress.
There's a chance my mother will hate it. I know she wanted me to wear something floor-length, but like Erick said, this�is�the dress. If mother doesn't like it, she can come shopping herself.
"So what's the occasion? Planning a party to celebrate your win this weekend?"�
We both know he's talking about the freestyle martial arts tournament that is sponsored by our dojo. Three days of fighting. It's the biggest event of its kind in this part of Texas. I've been waiting all year to compete. Besides being able to Chase, this is the next most important thing to me, a chance to showcase my talents and prove to my uncle I should be allowed to join the family business.

I received a copy of this novella from netgalley in exchange for an honest review.

Emily is trying to get past her eighteenth birthday so her mom can finally stop holding her back from becoming a chaser. She feels like it is in her blood to follow in her family's footsteps.

Emily's ex friend, Brett, comes back into her life after two years of not speaking. Emily believes he threw their championship match but Brett has secrets of his own. While trying to finally rid himself of his feelings for Emily, he ends up falling harder.

I loved the first book in this series. I thought it was pretty neat to see how Emily becomes part of the team. While this novella isn't really a pivotal part of the story, it's pretty interesting side story. I can't wait to read book 2, shadow allegiance.

Kicked butt

Although on the shorter side, I thought this book kicked butt. Emily Santos kicks ass on the mats (she's a black belt) and when she's fighting for her life. She's a Chaser, she protects humans and kills vampires, this is what she was born to do. I loved that even though she's born into a family of Chasers her mom still wants her to dress up like a "lady" and have her debutant ball, like things are normal. Loved Brett, he's sexy, sweet and smitten with Emily..so sexy, tough as nails too and will fight for Emily. Loved Erik too, not only is he Emily's cousin he's her best friend and fellow Chaser. Action packed, kick ass and some sweet lovin to, this story has it all. 4 stars review by Nanee at upallnightreadallday.blogspot.com
