About the Author
Prof. R. K Bansal was born on Jan. 1, 1943. He graduated in Mechanical Engineering in 1966. and joined Delhi College of Engineering in 1967 as lecturer and rose to the post of professor in 1995. Prof. Bansal did M. Tech Degree in 1975 with Honors from I.I.T. Delhi and Ph. D. from University of Delhi in 1981. He guided many final year projects, 08 M.E. Thesis and 01 Ph.D. student. He published many papers and two of his papers Application of F.E.M. to potential flow over a cylinder and F.E. analysis of ideal fluid flow over an Axi-symmetric solid body got Certificate of Merit from Institution of Engineers (India). Prof. Bansal held the position of Head of Department of Mechanical Engineering, faculty of Technology University of Delhi from 1st Jan 2000 to 31.12.2002. He also served as Dean (U.G. Studies) and Dean (P.G. Studies) in Delhi College of Engineering. Prof. Bansal is the author of many Engineering books which are followed as Text books in most of Engineering Institutions of the country. He got First Ever, Distinguished Authors Award in 1999 by the Federation of Educational Publishers in India.

Calculus Made Easy, Silvanus P. Thompson and Martin Gardner

Being an electrical engineer (with additional majors in mathematics and physics) and pushing twenty-five years work experience, I have to admit not a little anger at having read this book. This anger, however, stems from the facts a) that I was not fortunate enough to have had it as a resource while I was learning calculus and b) I have seen a lot of author-aggrandizing techno-babble dedicated to the subject that has served only to discourage the masses! Mr. Gardner has done a great service with regard to both Mr. Thompson's opus and all students of mathematics. With Mr. Gardner's additions, it is even simpler, more straightforward and, in terminology borrowed from the realm of pure mathematics, "elegant" in its presentation and demystification of the subject. To anyone beginning the study of calculus and desiring to understand and appreciate the subject, it is highly recommended for both reading and practice.

recommended reading for beginners and Calculus teachers.

I have been teaching Calculus for the last two years, and I just stumbled across this book a few weeks ago. What I found was a book that explains the philosophy of the subject in a very simple manner, making it easy to understand even for people who are not proficient in math.
The concepts in Calculus are really simple things; as Gardner puts it, "the universe seems to favor simplicity in its fundamental laws". But there's always the teacher's pride, which leads him to make it all seem difficult, expecting the student to be amazed at how much the teacher knows. Alas the true result is that the student is usually left confused, loses interest in the subject, perhaps gives up on a career that he/she otherwise would have succeeded in, etc. I know about this, because I am guilty of it myself.
I recommend this book to people who:
1. Are just learning calculus. The book uses easy-to-understand language, simple examples, etc. Read about the binomial theorem before reading this book, though.
2. People who want to grasp the essence of calculus, not necessarily for a college course. Easy, entertaining reading; as stated earlier, the philosophy of the subject is presented in a comprehensible manner.
3. Calculus teachers. Definitely a must! This book is a good example of how calculus should be taught. Though you may not draw totally upon it, having read through Thompson's book can give you a good idea on how to organize your course and how to explain fundamental concepts

Finally explained calculus in a way I understood

After 3 years of advanced mathematics in college and an engineering degree, everything I knew about calculus was rote: I could come up with the answers, but not because I understood the underlying principles or basis, but because I could memorize procedures. Years out of school, I bought this book and read it, and the light bulb turned on. I don't know whether I was just a bad student before, had bad teachers, or simply was presented the material in a way that was incompatible with the way I learn. In any case, this book did it for me, and perhaps it will do the same for others. I've since gone back through my old college math books, and they're as difficult to understand as they were the first time. If you know someone struggling with calculus, do them a favor and get them this book.

Poorly designed, print on demand.

I was disappointed to receive this book only to find it was a print on demand copy. The awkward formatting and margins make it more difficult to read and make the content feel less polished. I'll update the review once I'm able to get through it. I hope the content is better than the presentation.

About the Author
DIRK SWANEVELDER is currently completing his doctoral studies on plant-insect interactions. In both his masters and honours degrees he worked on the genus Clivia, first investigating different tissue culture protocols for multiplying Clivia miniiata, before examining the genetics, ecology, taxonomy and distribution of the genus. He has authored numerous articles for the Clivia Society Yearbook, as well as scientific papers and is co-author of descriptions of a new species, a natural hybrid and varieties in the genus.

ROGER FISHER is a Professor of Architecture in the Department of Architecture, University of Pretoria. He has taught in the programs of architecture, landscape architecture and interior architecture for the past twenty years. His interest in the genus Clivia is as a hobbyist and as an aspect of cultural heritage. He is a member of the Clivia Society and he currently edits the Clivia Society Newsletter and is lead editor for the Clivia Society Yearbook.

About the Author
Jack Shostak, Associate Director of Statistics, manages a group of statistical programmers at the Duke Clinical Research Institute. A SAS user since 1985, he is the author of SAS Programming in the Pharmaceutical Industry, and coauthor of Common Statistical Methods for Clinical Research with SAS Examples, Third Edition, as well as Implementing CDISC Using SAS: An End-to-End Guide. Shostak has published papers for the Pharmaceutical SAS Users Group (PharmaSUG) and the NorthEast SAS Users Group (NESUG), and he contributed a chapter, "Reporting and SAS Tool Selection," in the book Reporting from the Field. He is active in the Clinical Data Interchange Standards Consortium (CDISC) community, contributing to the development of Analysis Data Model (ADaM), and he serves as an ADaM trainer for CDISC. Shostak received an MBA from James Madison University and a BS in statistics from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University.

About the Author
John Kricher is Professor of Biology at Wheaton College, where he is the first recipient of the Bojan Hamlin Jennings Chair in the Natural Sciences and Mathematics. Among the many books he has written are A Field Guide to Ecology of Eastern Forests and A Field Guide to Ecology of Western Forests.

If you are travelling to the American tropics buy this book

This is just about the best introduction to the natural history of the New World tropics available and is a real bargain at this price. Another good alternative is "Tropical Nature" by Forsyth and Miyata.

I have been using this book since the first edition came out and now have both. It's also one of the books I try to pick up used to give to budding tropical naturalists. And to judge by the number of first-time visitors who carry this book, it is still proving extremely popular. I like the way the author has tried to give a broad overview of the important themes without compromising accuracy. Besides explanations of ecological processes and descriptions of wildlife, there is a strong emphasis on conservation with the final chapter devoted to "Deforestation and Conservation of Diversity". As a companion to the tropical naturalist this will be hard to beat.

Great Introductory Text

I found Kricher's text to be an enlightening, easy read for those interested in learning a subject they're not too familiar with. His explanations are satisfactory and he provides a broad, encyclopedic insight into the Neotropics as well as references for further reading. I also found his quips to be a nice break from the dry and tiresome technicalities that the topic often entails. Overall I think his book provides exactly what it he intended: an introductory text into Neotropical ecology.

A recommended book for the traveler and scientist

I live and work in Central America, and therefore often need information on a wide variety of topics regarding the local ecology. This book has served me very well as a resource which gives concise but engaging explanations of lots of the aspects of the ecosystems here. Perhaps the most important flaw is the lack of information on freshwater aquatic ecosystems. Similarly to other publications, this book leaves one with the impression that there is not much interesting about freshwater except in the Amazon drainage.
