Oscar Peterson's career as a jazz pianist has spanned over five decades. In this muddled and confusing autobiography, Canadian pianist Peterson pays a long-winded tribute to his many jazz pals in lieu of revealing much about his own life. It's a shame, considering so little is known about him; with well over 200 albums spanning six decades, Peterson (b. 1925) is widely considered one of the greatest and most prolific jazz musicians ever. Unfortunately, from the outset Peterson is a reluctant subject. He supplies some of the bare facts of his speedy rise to jazz superstardom from musical training under his Caribbean immigrant father, who administered lickings for wrong notes, to his being discovered in 1949 by legendary jazz promoter and Verve label owner Norman Granz, who set up Peterson's American debut at Carnegie Hall. There are some entertaining anecdotes, such the first time a wide-eyed Peterson attended one of Billie Holiday's drugged-up soir‚es and was met at the door by the tumbling body of her accompanist ("Billie was at the top of the stairs hurling invectives at him, and she ended this scene by throwing a couple of Coke bottles after him as he landed at my feet"). But there are never enough personal details to make Peterson come alive for readers. One hundred pages into this hefty tome, Peterson abruptly abandons his narrative to write a series of overwritten and uninsightful portraits of the jazz greats he's worked with, such as Lester Young and Coleman Hawkins; many vignettes are accompanied by poems. Instead of returning to the story of his life, Peterson chooses to end this odd book with a series of unrelated "essays" on great hotels and his experiences in the outdoors. The title of this autobiography says it all: the life of renowned jazz pianist Peterson (b. 1925) has truly been an odyssey. Born in Montreal to parents of West Indian descent, he first made a name for himself as a teenager in the Johnny Holmes Orchestra, Canada's top big band, before moving to New York City to record for RCA. During the 1950s, he became known as a gifted accompanist for Norman Granz's Jazz at the Philharmonic tours as well as for Dizzy Gillespie, Lester Young, Louis Armstrong, and Billie Holliday, among others. These encounters with the famous, along with his struggles with racism from a Canadian perspective, are all shared with great sincerity. Overseen by Palmer, the author of Oscar Peterson (o.p.), the narrative as a whole flows nicely. This latest entry on Peterson's life and work should help update other works, including Palmer's book and Gene Lees's Oscar Peterson: The Will To Swing, recently reissued by Cooper Square Press. Because jazz musicians live in a misunderstood, often besieged insular world, there is a natural tendency to be on guard against mainstream society. Thus, jazz autobiographies tend to be less than candid. Legendary pianist Oscar Peterson largely avoids this sugarcoating effect in his thoughtfully introspective, often remarkably revealing self-examination of more than 50 years as a professional jazzman. Playing with chronology much as a jazz soloist plays with melody, Peterson begins with his childhood in Montreal and moves through his career as a musician but frequently veers off path for profiles of fellow jazz greats or reflections on such topics as politics, racism, and his personal life. The profiles are especially interesting for the insights into the musicianship of such stars as Ella Fitzgerald, Lester Young, and many others. Peterson's discussion of the dynamics of the jazz trio and, in particular, the styles of the many outstanding bassists with whom he has played is a particular highlight. His prose occasionally tends toward the flowery, but this is a small irritant in an otherwise fascinating look at the jazz life. Bill Ott

Delightful reading!

Oscar's "autobiography" is delightful reading! It's written in a very conversational style. It covers various aspects of his youth, family, teachers and training, career, musical influences, and his fellow musicians. I have also read "The Will To Swing" by Gene Lees. Oscar's book is a great compliment to that book. It's nicer, in a way, since it's written by Oscar. The reader feels that we're meeting Oscar Peterson in person. In order to know Oscar beyond this, listen to the music. That was his life, after all!

The Title Says It All

A wonderful book! about a life well lived and enjoyed, and thankfully Mr. P is still on the planet. I must take issue with the Publishers Weekly review; it does not follow a predictable format, and why would it? Anyone who has heard this musical giant in live performance or on recordings realizes that the superlative, wonderful music that pours from his soul and through his fingers is truly a Jazz Odyssey. OP may have some idea of where he wants it to go, but in the end his musical journey of surprise and discovery is ours too. This is a book to read and re-read - just like his recordings, you will discover something new that you missed the last time around. Kudos!

We’re getting rid of our leaders. And we’re starting at the top.”

About the Author
P. J. O’Rourke has written eighteen books on subjects as diverse as politics and cars and etiquette and economics. funny and insightful book

As usual, P.J. O'Rourke has written a masterful, funny and insightful book. I am a huge fan of his. His work makes me laugh--but, also makes me think. (PJ may find the latter part to be scary.)

Our yearly PJ fix

This compilation seems a little rushed, but if you need a yearly PJ fix, this is a great way to do it. And since he writes for various publications, this is the best way to cover his work. He's a non-partisan (or maybe bi-partisan) offender, so no one is safe from his well-deserved jabs.

As P.J. says in his intro, it's a kind of hash of articles and notes without much continuity. There are a few good lines, a few funny yet incisive thoughts, but nonthing like Mr O'Rourke at his best.

Paul Dixon has travelled extensively in Southeast Asia, Eastern Europe, North Africa and the Indian subcontinent. He has spent the last nine years living and working in Indonesia, Singapore, Saudi Arabia and China as an English teacher. If You Hate Romantic Suspense, Run Away, Run Away

Iris and Will have a perfect marriage. They are in love. They are each other's favorite person (a phrase they exchange instead of "I love you"). They live in a perfect house (which they can't really afford) and have perfect jobs. Iris is a beloved psychologist at a private school. Will is a genius computer scientist at an up-and-coming company. To add to the idyllic bliss, they are trying to get pregnant (which is described in abundant detail). Will, about to leave for a three-day conference in Florida, has a special anniversary gift for Iris: a Cartier Infinity Ring, which is WAY more than they can afford.

Then, glowing with love, Will departs for his conference and Iris heads to school. The day is interrupted with news of a terrible Seattle-bound airplane crash with no survivors. Iris, while feeling compassion for the victims and their families, is relieved that this can't be Will's Florida-bound plane.

Only, according to the airline, Will is among the victims.

Which opens a great big can of worms. What would Will be doing on a plane to Seattle? What was he doing? Why had he lied to Iris? What else had he lied about?

Things get more and more complicated.

Iris is forced to undertake her own investigation to find the truth.

Kimberly Belle writes a convincing portrait of grief. Iris' pain is tangible. The storyline is involving, full of deception and surprises, twists and turns.

Beyond that, I should point out that I am not the target audience for this book. I don't read cozies. I don't read romantic suspense. If you do, read no further in this review. Enjoy the book. It's full of twists and surprises.

If you are like me, you won't be thrilled with this thriller. All of Kimberly Belle's great storyline is smothered in, what was to me, an assaultively overwritten style. Iris doesn't cry. Tears prick her eyes. She doesn't get angry. Rage coils in her belly. She doesn't get frustrated, Helplessness presses down on her hard enough to make her breathless. And while I wouldn't object to these descriptions being liberally sprinkled throughout the book, they crowd the pages. The other descriptions that crowd the pages are descriptions of Iris' and Will's bodies fitting together, their warmth, the frequency of their lovemaking, their smells, their tender moments...

I'm gonna need a good serial killer to get the taste out of my mouth.

If you are looking for a suspenseful quick read this is it. Not until the very end would I have guessed what Iris was to do. Surprised but glad she did. Easy read to get into and not put down.

Just open the door

This is the last book by this author I will read. If I open the door, will he say this? Or will he say that? Or will he say this or that? Or maybe he won't say anything? Maybe he's not behind the door? If he is not behind the door, what will I do? What will I say? Geez, just open the darn door to see if he is there and what he will say. WAY too much wasting time building up to what may or may not happen. I've lost my interest by the time the door gets opened.

Great book, have to buy answer keys separately

First, to understand my review, a little about me: I am fluent in English, Spanish and Russian and I am a linguist. So I enjoy all the details about language that this book includes.

Great book for practicing writing, dictation, and reading along with conversation skills. Each chapter introduces some letters, has you practice writing them, has a few dictation exercises where you listen and try to write the word. Also, the book has access to an online component which is SO MUCH easier than downloading each individual media file on your computer. The website is great and loads quickly. Towards the end, the focus is more on conversation.

The book focuses on Egyptian, Levantine and Modern Arabic. All vocab is presented in all three dialects. However, as someone studying Gulf Arabic (for which textbooks are hard to find), I wish they presented gulf arabic as well. Don't confuse yourself with all the dialects - if you just wnat to know Arabic stick with modern Arabic and then later learn a specific dialect.

The reason it recieves a 4:
1) The answer key has to be bought separately which is so annoying if you are learning on your own. Especially since they do not tell you this. I spent a good deal of time searching for the answer key before finally googling and figuring out I had to buy it.
2) Since it's a textbook, the book is quite pricey. Plus the online subscription only lasts 18 months, so if you want to use it for longer than 18 months, you will have to pay an additional $25 (the first 18 months are free).

Overall, a solid textbook. But probably better for serious language students who are learning a second or third language.

This book is a good back for a beginner to learn the basic arabic ...

This book is a good back for a beginner to learn the basic arabic letters and sounds and to be able to write basic words and sounds, as well some basic vocabulary.

The book starts off by showing how each letter is written in steps in the book and also includes a CD, which includes audio and video of how the letter is written and pronounced. This is especially useful as there are letters that make sounds that are not familiar to English speakers.

Furthermore, unlike English, Arabic is more phonetic and the word sounds like it's written, and doesn't have case like where "phone" is actually pronounced "fone". So the CD gives a lot of audio diction exercises, where you listen to a word and write down how you think it's spelled. This really helps in connecting the words you hear to letters. However, there are cases where one of the speakers doesn't make too much distinction between two really close sounding sounds, and this wasn't too helpful.

Additionally, the book slowly introduces vocabulary as you learn the alphabet in modern arabic, egyptian dialect, and syrian dialect, but it's best to learn the modern arabic first and learn the dialects later. This is good because it prevents you trivializing the vocab and allows you to know some basic greetings and phrases.

The book is overall good, but the worst part is that the answer key needs to be bought separately and the online companion site costs money too. However, it is not necessary and the book itself is fine. Overall, I'd recommend to someone starting out in learning Arabic.

BUY AT YOUR OWN RISK!!!

I already read the reviews and did not expect it to come with an access code. I wish I had ONLY bought an access code to use the website version because I've ordered this TWICE and both times my DVD didn't work AT ALL.
And apparently I am not alone because several other reviewers (this doesn't count people who didn't take the trouble to review it!) complain about defective DVDs. Even when the DVD is not entirely defective, apparently there are still missing or defective files!

I called Georgetown U press and Milica was not only rude, but completely unhelpful. I insisted that they give me an access code considering I am falling behind in my Arabic class, and this is the required textbook/DVD, and she refused saying that it must just be me and if it's not, maybe it's the DVD. YEAH...TWO DVDs..maybe it's the crappy company that produces it!

I don't know what I'm going to do, but this is way beyond BS!

If I could return all of this and get my money back, I would. And if I can avoid using anything from Georgetown Press again, I certainly will. What a scam.

I imagine that there are so many defects to the DVD to try to get people to buy the access code, but the fact that you have to pay double just to use their companion site is absurd. EFF this place. Eww. I am so so so angry.

It opened my eyes!

This is a life altering book, as is the followup which I also rate with five stars. I am a Benedictine oblate at the Abbey where some students of Prof. Senior now reside. One is the Abbot, another the Prior. I can certainly understand the impact he had on their lives. Every Christian should read both of the books. They will by unaffected.

Not for everyone...

This is not an entertaining book, nor an easy read. But it is a remarkable study of the Death of Christian Culture. While written nearly 40 years ago, Dr. Senior was a prophet in his own time who recognized where we were headed. It makes the reader think and reflect on what he has seen during his own life, and recognize the fruits of certain actions the public has allowed either by vote and voice or by their silence.

This book challenges all of us to take responsibility for who we are and our part in the formation of history.

My particular favorite is his reference to the televison as being Satan's "Trojan Horse" into our homes! Think about it...and read his book!
