Where are the words to decode?

This product is neatly packaged and a good price. I'm a licensed teacher who purchased these to teach son how to read. These books include high frequency words, but not enough words to decode. For instance in the book Bubbles the author wrote the following: "Bubbles in my drink." Instead she should have written "Bubbles in my cup." It would have had the same meaning and would fit with the picture. This change would give an emergent reader the opportunity to practice decoding. CVC (consonant -vowel -consonant) words are a good starting place. I saw this over and over within all of the books. They really aren't good for beginning readers, but are fine for a little later on. After purchasing these and being a bit disappointed I searched and found some better options. I really LOVE Lakeshores Sight Word Readers! They have a fiction and non-fiction set. My son conquered these quickly, and it really helped his esteem as a beginning reader. My list of alternatives that are great for first time readers:
1. Lakeshore Fiction Sight Word Readers
2. Lakeshore Non-Fiction Sight Word Readers
3. Starfall Set
4. Bob Books Sets (There are several of these on Amazon.)

Very beginner sight word readers

This is a nice set for the price. It is very beginner, the books do not progress in level, one book is just as easy as the next and the 7 pages in the books are very very repetitive. If your child is at the point were they are learning to point at a word to read and you are looking for a sight word(dolch) readers set. These are the books for you.

These books do not build on one another like leveled readers do. Each book adresses a sight word or two and are independent of the other books in the set.

an example:(that is the words for the entire 7 pages in the book.
Hello, sun.
Hello, Sand.
Hello, shell.
Hello, Crab.
Hello, gull.
Hello, sail.
Well, Hello, whale!

another example:
I add the banana.
I add the ice cream.
I add the chocolate.
I add the whipped cream.
I add the nuts.
I add the cherries.
We share dessert!

I would prefer a beginner reader that switches the words around a little more, so they aren't quit so easy to just remember with out looking at the words in the sentence.

But young children will find these rewarding to read until they become more confident readers.

Wonderful sight word and beginning reading practice

This set consists of 25 tiny, very short books. Each book has 7 pages, plus a title page. The books have pictures on each page which help illustrate what the child is reading (although sometimes they are a little too helpful, as there are instances that my daughter will look to the pictures rather than sounding out tougher words). The books are on the flimsy side, made of paper with a single string binding each one. For beginning readers, they are really helpful for practicing sight words and sounding out simple vocabulary. They don't keep my daughter's attention as well as larger books for beginners that have more vibrant illustrations and more of an actual story behind them, but they do hold her interest better than simple flash cards for practicing sight words. Having a variety of books to choose from is also nice. In some books, the first two or three words of a sentence will repeat for several pages, which can make it easier for the reader. This also seems to build some confidence, so I didn't mind it too much. Overall, we have found them to be quite helpful as she learns to read.

Yes, this is Light on Yoga in Spanish

Wasn't sure at purchase (because of the cover) whether this is in fact the Spanish translation of B.K.S. Iyengar's Light on Yoga (the yoga bible) Light on Yoga: Yoga Dipika, but it is. It is a translation castellano, printed in Barcelona. The translators are listed as Jose Manuel Abeleira y Erika Pastrana and the book was published originally in 2005 by Editorial Kairos, with the volume I received from Serendipity Unlimited in New condition being the 8th edition published in 2012. As Spanish is a second language for me I can only say generally that the translation appears accurate. All the photos are the same as in Light on Yoga. There is a year 2000 Preface to the New Edition: My Reflections, written by Guruji. Then all the sections in the original are here, including the Introduction, Asanas Bandhas Kriyas, Pranayama, Appendix I Asana Courses, Appendix II Therapeutic Courses, Table of Figures, Glossary, and Index. Physically the book is larger than my English version of Light on Yoga, meausring 19cm wide x 25cm long (7 1/4" x 9 3/4").

About the Author

Mohamed Cheriet is Professor in the Department of Automation Engineering at the Ecole de Technologie Superieure of University of Quebec, Montreal. He is the Director of Synchromedia Consortium, working in the fields of image processing, document analysis and recognition, learning algorithms, perception, and intellipresence. Nawwaf Kharma is Associate Professor in the Department of Computer and Electrical Engineering at Concordia University, Montreal. He is Director of the Concordia Computational Intelligence Lab (CeCIL) and a member of the ACM-SIGEVO. ChenG-LIn Liu is a Research Professor and the Deputy Director of the National Laboratory of Pattern Recognition (NLPR), Institute of Automation, Chinese Academy of Sciences. He is working in the fields of pattern recognition, machine learning, and document analysis. Ching Y. Suen is the Director of the Centre for Pattern Recognition and Machine Intelligence of Concordia University in Montreal, working in the fields of handwriting recognition and human-computer communications.

About the Author

Atul Kochhar is one of the finest Indian chefs in the country, renowned for the vibrancy of his food and the subtlety of his spice mixes. He was one of the first two Indian chefs to be awarded a Michelin star and he has become the recognisable face of Indian cuisine on television. Good.. but could be better!

This book has a good selection of images, but in my opinion not enough. Histology is a lot about seeing slides and memorizing how different tissues etc look like, and I wish this book had more examples of each category with better image quality.

About the Author
Born and raised in New York City, Charles Brandt is a former junior high school English teacher, welfare investigator in East Harlem, homicide prosecutor, and Chief Deputy Attorney General of the State of Delaware. In private practice since 1976, Brandt has been president of the Delaware Trial Lawyers Association and the Delaware Chapter of the American Board of Trial Advocates. He has been named by his peers to both Best Lawyers in America and Best Lawyers in Delaware. He is a frequent speaker on cross-examination and interrogation techniques for reluctant witnesses. Brandt is the author of a novel based on major cases he solved through interrogation, The Right to Remain�Silent. He is also the co-author of Joe Pistone's Donnie Brasco: Unfinished Business and of Lin DeVecchio's We're Going to Win This Thing: The Shocking Frame-Up of a Mafia Crime Buster.

I Heard You Paint Houses (mob argot for "I heard you murder people) is the story of a hit man and the disappearance of J. Hoffa

Charles Brandt the New York born author has done an excellent job of telling the story of Frank "Irish" Sheran a hit man for the mob. Sheran was born in an Irish neighborhood in Philadelphia in 1920. He was tall and hefty. In World War II he served as a combat soldier for 411 horrendous days in hellholes such as Salerno and Anzio. After the war he married and got involved with the Italian dominated Costra Nostra. He became a friend of a mob boss becoming involved in union activities as well as many criminal activities. He was a hit man and killed many men. He was a good friend of Jimmy Hoffa and tells the story of the union leader's disappearance in detail. We also learn about the Watergate scandal and how Hoffa and the mob gave money to Nixon. The book is to be turned into a new film . An interesting look at organized crime. First person quotes from Sheran are used throughout the book. He served time in prison and died in 2003. A good read for fans of Mafia and true crime books.

Great book, but read the qualifications ....

Excellent book - I recommend it for some readers and with some qualifications. Two key interests a reader should have to enjoy this book immensely are appreciation of history and a curiosity for criminal stories and organized crime. Amazingly, there's a great deal of US history here beyond Jimmy Hoffa. The central question is: did Sheeran (the main character) lie to the author? Or is it all true? There's no middle ground. If Sheeran lied on some aspects, then we should not trust any other aspects. To believe Sheeran is to believe: (i) Sheeran killed Hoffa; (ii) the mob assassinated JFK; (iii) the mob threw the 1960 election to JFK by vote fraud in Illinois; (iv) JFK's motive in Bay of Pigs was payback to organized crime to recoup lost assets in Cuba; (v) Joe Kennedy maintained his mob ties his entire life and implied to crime figures that he could "control" his sons JFK and Bobby; (vi) Jimmy Hoffa ordered many violent illegal activities including murder; (vii) the mob made cash bribes to John Mitchell - Nixon's attorney general; (viii) Mitchell actually accepted one such bribe at the front door of his own home. Can all of this really be true? It would be SHOCKING! So I have trouble believing it. One further draw for "I Heard You Paint Houses" is that the main character is such a sociopath. In almost all books, the reader wants to identify with the main character. I sense that the author TRIES to get the reader to identify with Sheeran. Perhaps the author himself bonded with Sheeran. That's bizarre - Sheeran was evil incarnate with a functional and handsome exterior.

Fascinating story

This is a fascinating story that not only encompasses the disappearance of Jimmy Hoffa but also the mob; John Kennedy, his Presidency and his assassination; Bobby Kennedy, his acts as Attorney General, and assassination; Richard Nixon and his Presidency; the Cuban Revolution and the Bay of Pigs invasion. Whew! This is the reason this book is so long...the research by the author is amazing. Frank Sheeran is a hit man for the mob and before his death wanted to "confess his sins" and from interviews over a long period of time, the author has compiled the testimonies of Sheeran into this book. A lot of mysteries are solved, if Sheeran told the truth. At times, the story rambles and repeats itself. I feel the author lost his way a bit by becoming too emotionally close to Sheeran, forgetting that he was a cold-blooded killer who used the court system to avoid punishment way too long and even when imprisioned, the stretch served wasnt any more than a slap on the wrist. One sentence that I was astounded to read was when Sheeran faced his death by saying, "...I confessed my sins to a priest and he forgave them." Frank fully believed he and all his buddies that found religion were all heaven bound.

A remarkable amount of the literature of ancient Mesopotamia, and some neighboring regions, has come down to us due to the fact that it was written on clay, or occasionally cut into stone, and has survived into modern times literally by the ton. Of course, most of the sheer volume seems to have been things like tax receipts, "account receivable," disbursement orders, contracts, business letters, and scribal exercises; cuneiform ("wedge-shape") writing seems to have been developed for bureaucratic, not literary, reasons. The oldest texts still seem to be those in Sumerian, a language with no known relatives, although there is increasing evidence that the script was being used to write a Semitic language earlier than had been thought.

In "Before the Muses" (1993; third edition, 2005), we have an anthology of literary texts in what has become known as Akkadian, covering the temporal, regional, and literary dialects of an East Semitic language which used to be referred to, awkwardly, as "Assyrian and Babylonian," after the two main geographic divisions. It runs from the "Archaic" phase (say, 2300 B.C.E.) to the Late Period, ending somewhere around 100 B.C.E. I've read enough other translations of some of the contents to feel safe in saying that Foster's English renderings of them are impressive for their literary quality. (His accuracy I pretty much have to take on faith.)

With the exception of "Gilgamesh," which Foster separately translated for Norton (and has several other recent translations in print, notably by Stephanie Dalley, in the Oxford World's Classics' "Myths from Mesopotamia," and by Andrew George, in Penguin Classics' "The Epic of Gilgamesh") the translator has crammed into this collection at least a substantial sample of the most important literary genres of the ancient Assyrians and Babylonians. It includes mythic narratives, epics of heroes and historical kings, Wisdom texts, humorous stories, royal inscriptions, poetry, letters, and more; the harvest of over a century and a half of work in the field, and in museums and collections. Bit by bit the material has been identified, copied and photographed, the complex script transliterated, and, finally, the words have been rendered into modern languages.

Alas, I have to agree with an earlier reviewer who complained about the binding -- at over a thousand pages, it is an overstuffed paperback which is sure to crack its spine in ordinary use. It is also awkward to handle, both in terms of weight on the hands or wrists, especially for those with joint problems, and in preventing it from breaking in two while being read. Just letting the open book lie flat also tends to stress the binding.

On the other hand, a hardcover edition of "Before the Muses," or one in two volumes, like its first edition, although easier to handle, would be at a higher price; which, although I know is quite reasonable by present standards, as it is, still gives me sticker-shock. (A sign of how long I have been buying books, I suppose.)

For those who can't afford it, or don't want to invest that much in something unfamiliar, the abridged edition of 1995, "From Distant Days: Myths, Tales, and Poetry of Ancient Mesopotamia," is still available, at a more down-to-earth price. (This could be counted as a second edition plus-or-minus; it contains some material not included in the first edition, as well as corrections incorporated from the official second edition....) Frankly, though, if you are really interested in ancient non-Western literatures, or the background of the Bible, or Middle Eastern History (among other topics), my advice is to go ahead with the full version if you can; otherwise you might wind up buying both. And, in an area of scholarship that is still developing, a later edition of the same translation is usually the better choice. (Is anyone else thinking 'e-book'?)

And, besides being overstuffed with regards to the binding, the full edition is stuffed full of both otherwise readily available material (like a translation of the Babylonian Creation Epic, "Enuma Elish," and the other myths and mythological epics included in Dalley's volume) and masses of hymns, prayers, incantations, and secular literature. Much of it previously was available in English only in technical journals, or not at all. Some of the translations were from early in the twentieth century, and of dubious reliability. (Those who read German or French have had comparable, if less inclusive, volumes available for years; back in the 1980s and early 1990s, I struggled with those, as well as running down English translations in a large University library.)

[It somewhat belatedly occurred to me that I might as well identify the French and German volumes, for those who are curious, and read one or both with more ease than I ever achieved. The French translation is M.-J. Seux. "Hymnes et pri�res aux dieux de Babylonie et d'assyrie" published in 1978. W. von Soden contributed the second part of "Sumerische und Akkadische Hymnen und Gebete" published in 1953 (Adam Falkenstein having translated the Sumerian texts). There is considerable overlap between these two collections, given that both are made up of the same types of documents. Something over half of von Soden's selections are included by Foster; and, if 20-year-old memories are accurate, about the same is true of Seux's. Note that although von Soden is highly thought of, his work has aged during a continuing expansion of modern knowledge of the ancient language.]

An absolutely magnificent anthology.

A great translation for both experts and literature lovers like me, Foster provides citations and references on almost every page, for those interested in broadening their knowledge on the subject. My only complaint about specifically this edition of the book is that it's printed paperback, which is horrible, considering its more than 1000 pages long. I hope to see a hardcover version in the future.

a very lovely collection

I am not a specialist of Akkadian studies, and bought this book merely out of interest. This very thick book (over 1000 pages) covers the different periods of the Akkadian history, from Old Akkadian (Archaic period) to the Late period, offering a very wide selection of texts (hymns, letters, incantations, love and mythological poems, legends, etc.). There is also a fairly lengthy introduction with numerous references to other literature, which will surely benefit not only amateur, but also professional students of the field.
