About the Author
Jay Allen Sanford -��is an American author and cartoonist best known for his work with Revolutionary Comics, Carnal Comics, and Pacific Comics. He co-created the comic book Rock ‘N’ Roll Comics with Todd Loren in 1989, which is still being published in 2011 by Bluewater Productions. The publishing company he co-founded, Carnal Comics, is best known for launching the movie and cartoon character Demi the Demoness. Sanford ran Carnal Comics from 1994 through 2000, before handing over the publishing reins to SS Crompton.

Don't Rock N Roll & Comics Go Well Together?

When I first saw this book the cover looked to me as some sort of Guitar Hero rip-off or wannabe because of the cover's artwork and the title itself, Hard Rock Heroes (and the way it was written on the cover), reminded me of the video game franchise. Reading the description at the back of the book made me realize it was totally different and NOT linked to Guitar Hero in any way. In fact, Hard Rock Heroes could be best described as a collection of comics from different rock/metal bands published prior to 1992 (with exception on the brief Motley Crue one which was included in the band's 2004 box set, Music To Crash You Car To II. They also included a "missing" Skid Row comic from 1990 that was appearently never published.). At almost 300 pages the book makes for a good read, it took me a few hours and I really enjoyed how realistic the artwork was in the comics (some are so-so but they are mostly excellent in terms of art).

Hard Rock Heroes includes comics of the following bands : AC/DC, Megadeth, Metallica, Pantera, Poison, Guns N'Rose, Queensryche, Van Halen, Black Sabbath/Ozzy, Skid Row, Anthrax, Motorhead , Tesla and Motley Crue. If you're interested by the majority of these bands, would like to read some excellent comics that look at those band's careers exactly as it was and having some cool and detailed artwork as well, this is for you. For those who want to see what they're buying, it's best you do, head to a library and seek out this book, after flipping through pages and reading here and there you will have better judgment. That's exactly what I did, I flipped through the book, read here and there and I decided to give it a shot and I have not regretted it. The lengths of the comics vary from one another, there are longer ones such as the AC/DC and Queensryche ones, middle lengths ones such as the GN'R and Megadeth ones and brief ones like Motley Crue's. The Ozzy/Black Sabbath and Van Halen stories each receive two comics instead of one which is pretty cool.

I liked pretty much all of the comics but I particularly enjoyed the Ozzy/Sabbath, AC/DC, Metallica and Van Halen ones, perhaps the stories were more interesting or maybe I am just more into those bands. I know that this book will get criticized for covering some of the 1980's Glam/ Hair Metal bands like Poison, Skid Row and Tesla but I found the comics enjoyable and don't have anything against these band though I certainly understand why someone would. What do you expect from a collection of rock n roll comics? It's hard to give a definitive answer but I do like them to be accurate as far as facts and storytelling goes, that's what you get here, I was surprised at how accurate those comics were. The writers got the chart numbers, albums sales and date perfect almost each time (I found two or three minor errors), you can tell by reading one of the comics in Hard Rock Heroes that the folks who wrote the comics back then really care about the music! Frankly I don't know what's left to say, Hard Rock Heroes is an excellent read for the rock and comic book fans or simpler people who strongly like rock music. I am not a huge fan of comics anymore but I appreciated those offered in this book, 4 stars.

This is one of those I thought was worth the expense. I was a true fan in the 90's with the original rock and roll comics. So getting them now for my book shelf is a very cool thing. The book is in black and white and wish they colored it - but I thought it holds up very well.

He supports his assertion by arguing that a snipers impact on the morale of the opposing force far exceeds the number of enemy Soldiers he actually engages. West then goes on to further suggest that a sniper can elicit an over response from his enemy which subsequently allows the urban guerilla movement to leverage the media to influence international opinion. Ultimately West firmly establishes his position that a snipers value far exceeds the necessary investment in training and equipment.

Fry the Brain is a long book that really takes an extensive look at the role and impact of the urban sniper through the lens of numerous urban conflicts from Stalingrad in World War II, to the current conflict in Iraq. His historical analysis are absolutely outstanding in general, and provide an excellent foundation for his subsequent discussion concerning the role of the sniper in each battle. West's examination of each conflict is accomplished through an examination of the tactics, and equipment employed by the urban sniper in each of the contingencies, usually through an analysis of a specific sniper or sniper operation. In each case study West focuses on the challenges of infiltration, signature minimization, exfiltration, and the psychological impact of the sniper after the target(s) were serviced. Where ever possible West quantifies the number of sniper related casualties, and subsequently works to extrapolate through various indicators their ultimate impact at the operational level of the conflict.

West expands his examination of the urban sniper by also reviewing the snipers tools of the trade, and modern counter sniper tactics, and technology. It's obvious that West has an affinity for firearms, which isn't surprising since he himself served as a U.S. Army Special Forces Soldier for 22 years. His review of potential sniper weapons and equipment is unfortunately disappointing, not so much as a result of what he chose to examine, but because of technical mistakes that shouldn't have been made by an author with his credentials. The two most frustrating mistakes that he made throughout the book were his reference to suppressing a revolver, and the employment of exploding bullets.

West is absolutely enamored with the concept of the suppressed firearm. His arguments concerning the benefits of the snipers employment of a suppressed weapon are compelling, but on more than one occasion he specifically suggests the employment of a suppressed revolver. With only a few model specific exceptions (Nagant Revolver), revolvers cannot be effectively suppressed due to the gap between the cylinder and the barrel. If West had specified that a revolver be suppressed to conceal the muzzle flash his argument would be more valid, but he clearly indicates the purpose of the suppressor as to reduce the sound signature of the weapon when fired. Additionally considering the amount of time spent discussing weapon suppression, it would have been appropriate to add a decibel examination to the discussion, to quantify the effect of modern suppressors when used in conjunction with a standard semi-automatic firearm.

West `s suggestion that `exploding' bullets be used to minimize the forensic signature of the sniper is particularly disappointing. West would lead the reader to believe that there is a small caliber round filled with explosives that detonates on contact. That round simply does not exist. What West is probably referring to is a frangible round that essentially disintegrates when it meets a medium denser than itself. Frangible rounds are commonly used in indoor ranges to reduce the potential of ricochets. The frangible round would meet all the forensic aspects of West's assertion, short of his suggestion that `exploding' rounds were used by Kennedy's assassins. In the case of Kennedy's assassination, West suggests that the round that penetrated the front windshield of the president's car, and subsequently struck him in the throat was an `exploding' round. By his own analysis the round should have exploded on impact with the windshield and would have never made it to the president.

Overall the book is a great review of the historical impact of the sniper in the urban environment. A more well versed editor would have caught and addressed the issues concerning the suppression of a revolver, and the reference to exploding bullets. Those errors are really minor detractors from an otherwise very good book. West's analysis of urban sniper tactics is unparalleled and provides a one source reference for the counter insurgency professional working against the modern urban sniper. Ultimately West firmly establishes his position that a snipers value far exceeds his quantitative impact on the battlefield.

Exceptional work on unconventional sniping

Fry the Brain is a comprehensive and revealing look at urban guerrilla sniping, one of the most notorious and least understood disciplines of insurgent warfare. Sniping is a precision tool used by insurgents to surgically target individuals without causing collateral damage. As West notes, "the embodiment of urban guerrilla warfare is the sniper, a lone individual who moves among the people." Snipers use their surroundings to their advantage, taking their shot, then disappearing into the population. Resistance movements and insurgencies of all shades and stripes have made use of the guerrilla sniper.

For many, the quintessential image of a sniper is a young, fit male who is professionally trained, wears a ghillie suit and fires from extreme distances with a high-powered rifle that has an equally high-powered scope. West proves, in case-study after case-study, that not only is this caricature an inaccurate portrayal of the most predominant sniping campaigns and the most prolific snipers, but also that this conventional, rural-centric mindset is often a poor fit and even counterproductive for applications in modern urban guerrilla warfare.

West breaks the mold of the conventionally-minded construct of a sniper and offers a paradigm-shifting perspective on the insurgent tactic of sniping. Fry the Brain shows that some of the most effective snipers had no formal equipment or training and were self-taught. Vassili Zaitsev, World War II's most famous sniper, began his career as a payroll clerk in the Russian navy before he learned how to shoot while fighting the German army in Stalingrad. The French resistance and the Russian army in World War II, Bosnians in Sarajevo, and guerrillas in Chechnya all frequently used women snipers because they could move about with less scrutiny from security forces. Further breaking the conventional construct, West demonstrates how small caliber rifles and even modified pistols have been effectively used in urban sniping campaigns at distances much shorter than those in a rural setting-- some as close as 50 meters.

West walks the reader through every major sniper campaign, from World War II to present-day Iraq. He also includes detailed accounts of some of the most infamous and sensational one-time sniper events, including the assassination of President Kennedy and the Washington, D.C., snipers. West contrasts the differences between guerrilla sniping and conventional sniping, including the need for anonymity, the constraints on freedom of movement, the need for absolute secrecy and the requirement for physical dissociation between the sniper and the weapon after taking the shot. Fry the Brain also includes a wealth of technical data on classic and modern weapon systems, and on new counter-sniping technology. He also presents an interesting discussion and analysis on the use of forensics as a measure for defeating snipers, as well as how snipers frequently use counter-forensics to maintain deniability and evade suspicion and capture.

West also discusses the psychology behind sniping and sniping's effect on the enemy. Of particular interest is his assessment that modern armies tend to be extremely vulnerable to this asymmetrical threat. Because conventional militaries are heavily invested in the traditional concept of warfare, West says, there tends to be a basic lack of understanding among leaders and experts in the field about insurgent movements. This often leaves soldiers ill-prepared or equipped to deal with snipers, leading to clumsy overreactions, collateral damage and, ultimately, alienation of the population the soldiers are trying to protect.

Fry the Brain is both a history lesson and a glimpse into the future. The book demonstrates that urban guerrilla sniping is a dramatic departure from the traditional concepts of sniping. West makes a solid case that formal training and a precision rifle are not prerequisites for effective sniping and that given the right conditions, some innovative thinking and knowledge of unconventional methods of sniping, a self-taught sniper can prove to be just as effective as a formally trained one.

A very good read

This book is the first of its type that I have read which didnt seem to be regurgitating an army field manual. There is quite a lot of good information here regarding tactics used by both snipers and counter-snipers and pros and cons of both. I found the analysis of the JFK assassination to be particularly interesting as well as the chapter on the DC snipers. I would definitely recommend it to law enforcement and anyone else interested in the subject.

Excellent Overview of Scrum Basics

Carlton brings his knack for extracting the essence of a concept and explaining it concisely and clearly, to his book "14 Observations of Good Scrum Practice". The book is organized for easy access to the new Scrum practitioner, defining and laying out the essential Scrum practices and roles that are at the core of a successful Scrum practice. One of the most important takeaways for me, from attending Carlton's "Introduction to Scrum" class and from the book, is the diamond diagram on page 30, which elegantly describes the dynamic tension and interplay of the ScrumMaster, Product Owner, Team, and Stakeholders, highlighting the integral role of Stakeholders in the Scrum process. Carlton's "14 Observations..." is a great companion for getting to know Scrum.

Somewhat interesting

Some of the book was pretty good. I did not enjoy some of the older stories that were told as much as the ones everyone has heard about (Manson, Son of Sam, and Night Stalker). I would give the book three stars and I might reread it again. It was worth the time to read. The thing I did like about the book was all the different killers talked about. Some were people that I have never heard of before. It was a cheap book on Kindle so I really can't complain to much. The price was about right for the book. On the other hand I did find some of the older stories boring. I would have liked to have seen more current people in the book.

Had a few problems with the font on my Kindle Fire but the content was great! Some of the crimes I had heard of before and some were ones I had not heard of before.
