Excellent!

What a wonderful book! I finished it the same day that I began - I was that engrossed in the story. This story takes place in the 1st century during Emporer Nero's reign. Nero has captured the Apostle Peter and interrogates him to find out more about a new religious sect - christianity. It is clear that Nero is trying to find something negative against the Christians, but Peter (in a very humble and wise manner) only tells the truth about the miracles and beautiful testiment of Jesus Christ.

The truth is: all of Peter's answers are found in the Gospel of Mark. I like how the author did not try to put words in the Apostle's mouth but only used his account found in the Bible (for those that are unfamiliar with the Bible, the Gospel of Mark is believed to be Peter's account of the Life of Jesus).

The story is actually about a particular character named Vitalis (a Roman official who participates in the interrogation). It is his response that is quite moving in this book. We see how he goes from skepticism to belief - as he listens to an elderly fisherman recount his days with this mysterious "Christos."

I really enjoyed this book. More so than I thought I would. I have had this book for a while, and I just happened to pick it up because I was bored. I am happy that I took the time to read it. For those that are history buffs...the author took great care in researching his history. I felt like I was transported back in time as I read. I look forward to reading more of this very talented author's work.

There are many excellent reasons C�sar Vidal is an international bestselling author, and "The Fisherman's Testament" is one of them.

In "The Fisherman's Testament," Se�or Vidal blends superb storytelling with Scriptural truth into a powerful novelization of Mark's Gospel. Originally penned in Spanish, nothing is lost in translation in this novel that garnered the Martinez-Roca Spirituality Prize in 2004. Consider the first sentences of the novel for a flavor of the author and his main character:

"I, Marcus Junius Vitalis, known amongst my men as the "Asiatic," veteran soldier in the service of Rome, faithful companion of C�sar Claudius and C�sar Nero, know that I have arrived at the last stretch of this winding and bitter path we call life. Others will live on, be it for a shorter or longer time, but my life is ending. Before I know it, it will be utterly extinguished, and I will find myself cast onto the shores of a different world."

It is from this perspective Vitalis relates his story of an encounter that upended his world view as a die-hard defender of Rome and staunch adherent to the ideals of the Empire, and framed his view of the "different world" now poised to receive him.

The setting is 62 AD Rome, in Nero's palace. The Emperor commissions Vitalis to investigate a neo-Jewish cult who profess to follow the "Christos." One of the last survivors of the original inner circle of the "Christos," a fisherman named Petros, is imprisoned in Rome. Nero decides to lead the prosecution personally to ascertain why this cult that calls itself "The Way" did not die out after the crucifixion of its leader 30 years earlier, as so many other rebellions had in the past--indeed, it continues to grow, its influence now reaching into even the capital city. Vitalis joins Nero in the interrogation and hears the tale from the mouth of Petros through Mark, his companion and translator. Nero and Vitalis walk away with completely divergent impressions of the story they've heard.

Only 167 pages, this is a `quick read'; however, its impact will linger long after you reach the back cover. While nothing can replace Scripture, The Fisherman's Testament is a worthy alternative text to recommend to someone who may never otherwise crack open the Bible. The power in hearing the Gospel is presented through the divinely inspired words of Petros and Mark, anticipated objections and misunderstandings of the message are delivered through the humanly understandable reactions of Nero and Vitalis, and the joy of reading excellent prose is delivered through the enviable literary skill of Se�or Vidal. Tough combination to beat!

A unique retelling of the gospel of Mark. Excellent!

The Fisherman's Testament is a unique retelling of the gospel of Mark. The story is told from the perspective of Marcus Junius Vitalis, a Roman military general, who is summoned by Caesar Nero to assist with the interrogation of an important leader from the sect known as the Christians. This leader turns out to be none other than the apostle Peter. Since Peter is not fluent in Latin, he is accompanied by an interpreter known as Mark. As Caesar Nero and Vitalis ask questions to ascertain how dangerous these Christians are, Peter responds by methodically sharing the gospel story. While Nero is irritated by Peter's story, Vitalis is deeply moved and disturbed by the story of Jesus and its implications. As the trial is coming to a close, Vitalis avoids the final sentencing by feigning sickness and escaping to the countryside. Shortly thereafter the story comes to a close. In the end we learn that Peter was executed, Rome has burned, and Vitalis has come to terms with the story of Jesus. He has embraced the story Peter shared wholeheartedly and has himself become a follower of Jesus Christ.

If you're a fan of historical fiction set in the time of the early church, I highly recommend you take a look at this book. History buffs will appreciate the many cultural details that show up throughout. There are a number of Latin words that will most likely be unfamiliar to the reader. Fortunately, there is a short glossary at the back of the book, which defines some of these lesser known Latin words and phrases. All things considered, this book was truly a great read. I'd put it on par with such classics as Lloyd C. Douglas's The Robe or The Big Fisherman. As such, it has earned the rating of 5 out of 5 stars.

This monumental historical dictionary of companies, people, places and events in the petroleum industry belongs in every college and university library, every public library, and in the company library of every firm in the industry. The 400+ well-written, information-rich entries in this 663-page dictionary feel like 4,000. They are encyclopedic and packed with cross-references. The dictionary also contains 14 appendices containing tables and charts. Typographically, the dictionary is beautiful. The dictionary was written by a former research geophysicist at ARCO Oil who has a PhD in geophysics from Caltech and an MBA from UCLA.

Sage, scientist, and sorcerer, Hermes Trismegistus was the culture-hero of Hellenistic and Roman Egypt. A human (according to some) who had lived about the time of Moses, but now indisputably a god, he was credited with the authorship of numerous books on magic and the supernatural, alchemy, astrology, theology, and philosophy. Until the early seventeenth century, few doubted the attribution. Even when unmasked, Hermes remained a byword for the arcane. Historians of ancient philosophy have puzzled much over the origins of his mystical teachings; but this is the first investigation of the Hermetic milieu by a social historian.

Starting from the complex fusions and tensions that molded Graeco-Egyptian culture, and in particular Hermetism, during the centuries after Alexander, Garth Fowden goes on to argue that the technical and philosophical Hermetica, apparently so different, might be seen as aspects of a single "way of Hermes." This assumption that philosophy and religion, even cult, bring one eventually to the same goal was typically late antique, and guaranteed the Hermetica a far-flung readership, even among Christians. The focus and conclusion of this study is an assault on the problem of the social milieu of Hermetism.

A seminal work (for academics)

Fowden, as a writer, is admittedly no model of lucidity; at the same time, he is writing for academics, and is thus able to compress a huge amount into a small space. If you are not used to academic prose, you will find this book very difficult; it would also help if you know a certain amount about the reception of the Hermetica in 19th and 20th century historiography, and perhaps a bit about the late Classical era.
At the same time, this book has been reprinted for a reason: it's the single most important historical argument about the Hermetica. For a long time, the Hermetica were understood to be purely Greek, essentially Hellenic misappropriations of pseudo-Egyptian ideas, recast in Neoplatonic style. What Fowden does is to show that these texts do have an important base within the dying Egyptian traditions of their day.
For non-specialists, this may seem like small potatoes. But it changes everything. If you have read Frances Yates, for example, she argued that these texts were grotesquely misread by Ficino and the Renaissance tradition, on three counts: (1) they thought the texts were really, really ancient, more or less contemporary with Moses; (2) they thought the texts were Egyptian, not Greek; and (3) they thought the texts were really about magic (and not philosophy). Now there's no question that the Hermetica are from 1st-2d century Alexandria, but they are _not_ simply Greek; they are, in a sense, Egyptian formulations that draw on the then-influential Greek modes of philosophical thought. Furthermore, it means that the texts we usually think of as the Hermetic Corpus can and should be correlated with the PGM (the Greek Magical Papyri and their Demotic associates), changing the whole character of the texts by giving them a wildly different literary and ritual context. In other words, the Renaissance got the dating wrong, but in many respects got the rest more or less right; as a result, Fowden's book not only changes the way we read the Hermetica in their Alexandrian context, but also how we make sense of the Renaissance magical revival (Ficino, Pico, Agrippa, Bruno, etc.).
If, having read this review, you think, "Who cares?" then this book is certainly not for you. If you think, "Wow! That's fascinating," then this is essential. I have seen the odd quibble with small points in Fowden's arguments, but I have not seen any serious attack on the main thrust of the book. Considering when it was first written, that's extraordinary.
But you do need to be comfortable with academic prose.

Intriguing Window on Late Pagan Spirituality

The curious writings on Magic, Astrology, Alchemy, and Spirituality traditionally attributed to the Egyptian god Hermes Trismegistus have fascinated scholars, theologians, mystics, and occultists alike for almost two thousand years. Since the early 1600's most academics regarded the spirituality oriented "philosophical Hermetica" as the products of Greek philosophy and Gnostic Christianity with no Egyptian religious content. In this influential and often referenced book, Garth Fowden establishes these works as a blend of Greek and authentic Egyptian sources in a classic "east meets west" scenario. Hence the title "The Egyptian Hermes".
Leaving aside the disputes of the learned, what I found most interesting about this book is Fowden's attempt to understand the mindset and social and religious environment of the anonymous 2nd and 3rd century creators of the Hermetica. For instance, even though I am trained in physics and chemistry, I now begin to understand why a first century Greek-Egyptian could find astrology, alchemy and magic to be sensible pursuits. I was also intrigued to find these so-called pagans sought a transcendent union with the single god who created the cosmos, which includes the other gods. These and other unexpected mixtures of pagan and typically Christian beliefs serve to illustrate the broad range of religious and philosophical ideas in the Roman Empire during the time that Christianity was becoming established. I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in the history of religion or philosophy, not just to students of Hermetic philosophy.
Be warned, however, that this book is not an easy read. Fowden is an academic writing for academics. Specialized terms are often not explained and the writing style is complicated rather than lucid. Keep your (unabridged) dictionary handy. He also sometimes indulges in that annoying academic habit of not translating quotes from languages other than English. If you are willing to put in the effort, this book will be richly rewarding.

though not illustrated, this book is still useful

The origins of Hermes Trismegistus, the sage cult hero of Graeco-Roman Egypt, to many people has seemingly been lost in the midst of time. This is the first investigation undertaken into his mystic by a social historian. The technical and philosophical aspects of Hermetica as normally seen as separate entities, but the author argues for their togetherness as was typical of philosophy and religion of that era. The book has no illustrations or photos and in that sense it is quite scholarly. Definitely for those who are religion-orientated, especially and more precisely interested in Hermes.
