Old Testament scholars have long been aware that the traditional reading of the story of Adam and Eve as the 'Fall of Man', though hallowed by St Paul's use of it, cannot stand up to close examination of the text. However, they have not succeeded in formulating an alternative interpretation which rivals the force of this traditional reading or is relevant to such a wide range of biblical and theological issues. Professor Barr's new interpretation has such force, and with its challenges to many conventional views it is likely to cause a considerable stir among traditionalists and to excite those dissatisfied with aspects of traditional thought. Central to the book is its stress on the role and prevalence of the idea of immortality, commonly thought to be a later Greek and un-biblical import into Christian thinking. Reflection on immortality also leads to a reconsideration of ideas about death in the Hebrew Bible; about Sheol. the Hebrew underworld; and about the soul. Professor Barr brings out the importance of time for the Hebrew Bible and the concept of length of days, showing that the threat is not so much death as such, but the manner and time of death. His study of chronology leads to a reconsideration of the story of Noah's ark, and the book ends by seeing resurrection and immortality as complementary, rather than conflicting, ideas.

This biography of business magnate Lewis is based on his unfinished autobiography; he died in 1993 at age 50 from brain cancer. Walker, who writes for the "Money" section of USA Today, completed the book after interviewing Lewis's family, friends, colleagues and employees. Lewis, growing up in an African American family in segregated Baltimore, attended parochial school, worked his way through college and Harvard Law and became a successful attorney and highly visible business executive, capping his career with the leveraged buyout of conglomerate Beatrice International Foods for $985 billion in 1987. His personal fortune was $400 million, we learn in this inspiring bio/business study, which deftly conveys Lewis's concerns not only about his work but also about his family, race and his own death. When he died of brain cancer at age 50 in 1993, he was worth over $400 million and was considered by Forbes magazine to be one of the 400 wealthiest Americans. Not only was he an extremely successful businessman, but he was also a caring philanthropist. His journey from middle-class Baltimore resident to international citizen makes for fascinating reading. He was in the process of writing his autobiography when he died, and Walker consulted many sources in order to give a full and accurate account of this intense, goal-oriented man's life. Lewis's words appear in italics; Walker's, in Roman typeface, provide additional information. Walker discusses his subject's private life, but he concentrates more on the business aspects. This is enough. From a humble birth in 1942 Lewis rose to become CEO of the billion-dollar company Beatrice in 1987. Journalist Walker, who never met Lewis, based this chronicle on dozens of interviews and on an unfinished autobiography Lewis wrote shortly before his death from brain cancer in 1993. As an African American, Lewis may have had a rocky trip to the top, but he didn't "dwell" on his race, as he is quoted as saying in his New York Times obituary. Reading this history, one comes away with a renewed appreciation of the opportunities still available in the United States to those who work hard and long. Long hours alone do not explain Lewis's success, of course. Also important were his determination, tenacity, intelligence, and education-the story of how he got into Harvard Law School is fascinating. One need not understand leveraged buyouts to enjoy this well-written biography. Recommended for public libraries.

Content of Character

First off Im not sure what the negative reviews about biases were all about , but for me this book meant a lot . He showed me that with your business endeavors ; wealth is a team sport . Credibility is the guerrilla glue that holds them team together . I'm going to work hard to establish credibility so a team can be built on it . Reginald thank you for the life you lived . I saw myself in you so many times . The only thing I swayed from was the importance of Race , but nevertheless you gave me another perspective on the matter . I hope with every fiber in my bone , and strategy in my action our race can have a new leaf of consciousness turned .

One of the greatness

This book was exceptional and that was an understatement. In my opinion Reg was one of the best business people in the world. It's unfair to call him the best black business man, but was the best period. Without a doubt in my mind he would have controlled other great big brand companies like a movie studio, professional sports team, car dealer ship or anything else. Simply the man was astonishing and the book left me in tears and deserves a full biopic. As an aspiring entrepreneur this book will be one of the best I ever read on an entrepreneur if not the best. May God bless you Reg and that you are in Abraham's bosom. Also great work by Blair Walker as well.

Couldn't put it down!

An awesome read. I knew the story of Mr. Lewis fairly well yet once I started reading this book I was transfixed. It captivated me as a book rarely does. Although this book would be very pertinent for African-Americans, I am a white Canadian and I found this story to be absolutely inspirational, transcending any race or citizenship. It is about a person that always had a very strong belief in himself and stayed true to his vision, regardless of what seemed realistic to others. The focus and drive he possessed is incredible. What others would have viewed as failure he saw as a way to judge his performance and improve. The complexity of the deals he pulled off and the way he ran the companies to record profits shows the genius of this legend in corporate American history.

This should be made into a blockbuster Hollywood movie starring Jamie Fox as Reginald F. Lewis. Seriously,this story is 100 times more interesting than the Facebook story and look what they did with that! C'mon Spielberg, get on it.

Nice Hindi Supplement

This is a nice course for Intermediate Hindi learners. I like the readings and the grammar points are great. It does start out quite easy though although it does get progressively harder. There is a lot of good cultural insight too. The book is dense and has a ton of great information. I have worked through many other Hindi books and this one is a good supplement. I really recommend it for intermediate students of Hindi. The biggest downside though is that there is no audio, I really wish there was it would make the book a whole lot better! Otherwise it is a great book!

good book for hindi structures

This is a good book with many stories to help introduce new grammatical points and vocabulary. The way she set the book up is very user friendly. Again you would have to know script for this book (but everyone studying Hindi should.) She has a reference grammar too that she highly recommends to use in conjunction with this book.

No Outside Analysis; just the three interested party reports.

If you are looking for a book companion to the many excellent or good video programs, such as the NOVA episode, this is NOT it. What this is is the compilation of the three accident investigation reports - the Subsecretaria de Aviacion Civil official accident investigation report, the Dutch comments on that report, and the Air Line Pilots Association Aircraft Accident Report, lined up one after another in the book, all in English. It is very interesting to read the unfiltered and, as best as a can be translated, original language. Some very interesting points/claims that are typically left out of "new"'analysis are in the original accidents, including the claim by the Spanish Accident Investgators that KLM 4805 didn't need a drop of fuel to make it all the way back to Amsterdam; if true, this would make the whole accident even more unnecessary (and would have eliminated at least 30 minutes of wait time for both Jumbos to take off). The reading is fairly dry, so be prepared to read in smallish chunks (it's a fairly short book with big print). I like this book for what it is; if you are not trying to dig deep into the event (I.e., looking into it for the first time), then there are probably better books.

"Doctors extend the lives of their patients, but it's Jesus who saves them."

The death of an injured Cambodian man who refused to listen to any talk about Jesus had a life-changing effect on Dr. David Thompson, the author of this book. He was fourteen when his missionary father tried to share the gospel with the dying man. He knew that man's fateful destination and he considered witnessing his death as one of God's divine appointments with him. He writes, "From then on I began to ask God to allow me to become a missionary doctor who could help the injured and dying and give them the opportunity to hear and understand the good news of Jesus before it was too late." The Lord answered young David's prayers and many of his experiences are reported in his book.

Dr. Thompson intends this book for believers in the pews who desire to follow the Lord as best they can. He gives chapter and verse to show how Jesus helped the sick, the hungry, the homeless and the poor, but not just to bring peace and justice to this earth. He emphasizes the teachings and example of Jesus, explains them in modern terms, and makes them practical for today with real life stories from his thirty-five years as a missionary surgeon among the poor in Africa.

I read the Kindle version in one sitting because the author is a personal friend whose medical ministry has prolonged life for thousands and brought everlasting life to many of them as their bodies healed. My comments are based on my speedy read through in which I was shamed by the realization of my neglect in sharing my faith with people the Lord has put into my life. I think pastors and medical personal will latch on to other things which passed me by at first read.I plan to read this story again in print form so I can flip back to earlier pages as I am wont to do when something intrigues me.

Jesus taught and modeled the life we are to live because no amount of societal improvement can send a soul to heaven. Simply put, he left us but three commandments, which, when obeyed fully, would result in every man, woman and child living forever though their relationship with Jesus Christ.

We are commanded to love the Lord with all our hearts, to love our neighbors as ourselves, and to share the gospel with every person in the world. Physicians prolong lives for a time, but eventually every patient will die physically. Those who have given their lives to Jesus will live eternally with him. The others will suffer forever because we who knew the truth refused or neglected to share it.

Many of us believers find it hard to share the gospel so we neglect to do so. But only when we obey all three of these commandments will we be compassionate as Jesus was. If we truly love Him as we should, then we will also love those whom He loves. We will go to the ends of the Earth to find them, help them, and introduce them to him, no matter how hard it is, nor how costly it turns out to be. Our acts of mercy will not earn us a ticket to heaven. Jesus paid for that with his life. Our deeds toward those who need help are evidence that we have been born by the Holy Spirit of God.

Our fears convince us that talking about the gospel is Mission Impossible for us. It is. In our own strength! But we are not alone. We live and work by faith. We are empowered by the Holy Spirit who indwells all of us who have committed our lives to the Lord. He will enable us to do what we should, but we must take the initiative to befriend those people sent across our pathway by the Lord so we can tell them about Jesus.

Dr. Thompson reminds us in his book that the North American church, with all her money, armies of middle-class volunteers and organizations, cannot be the hope of the world. The hope of the world will forever be Jesus Christ. He concludes with this observation. "God has not called us to exhaust ourselves in a futile effort to save the world. He has called up to take his light to the world in power, mercy and love, proclaiming Jesus as we go. This is the truest mercy. This is Christian mercy."

Mission organizations should not forget mercy and justice

In this book, Dr. Thompson provides a strong argument against a common trend in Christian organizations and churches today. I am a missionary surgeon myself and know first hand that many missionary organizations no longer want to support medical missions and missionary hospitals. Instead, they only want church planting efforts in the 10-40 window. However, if Christ himself said that our heavenly father is concerned even about a sparrow, how much more for the suffering of human beings even if they are not in a 10-40 country; even if the Joshua Project designates them as a "saved" country. The thought of a woman and her baby both dying simply due to the lack of a simple C-section would be obscene in the United States. And yet many American Christian organizations now turn their backs on these suffering people. They only want non-medical, church planting missionaries who bring in the "numbers" of saved people. Do those numbers really mean anything? With Christ, it has always been personal. He cares about individuals. And at the heart of Christian medical missions, is the individual, suffering patient; a patient who needs both physical healing but also the saving gospel of Jesus Christ.

Insightful expose reminding believers of the primary goal of merciful acts

This book is a quick read, written by Dr David Thompson who spent over 30 yrs as a missionary physician in Gabon, Central Africa. Culling numerous examples from his personal experiences, Dr Thompson highlights the importance of keeping the gospel of Jesus Christ clear and central in all outreach activities. It serves also as a stark reminder of the church's role and responsibility in caring for the poor and disenfranchised.
Along with the central message, the author delves into the role of Divine Healing and deliverance from demonic possession (a topic uncomfortable to the Western mindset) in mission work.
Overall this book is illuminating, bold, scripturally balanced and highly recommended to all Christians involved in any form of outreach. If read with an open mind it will serve as a. Great blessing and a positive challenge to Christian workers. I highly recommend it to all who do short or long term medical missions
