"Doctors extend the lives of their patients, but it's Jesus who saves them."

The death of an injured Cambodian man who refused to listen to any talk about Jesus had a life-changing effect on Dr. David Thompson, the author of this book. He was fourteen when his missionary father tried to share the gospel with the dying man. He knew that man's fateful destination and he considered witnessing his death as one of God's divine appointments with him. He writes, "From then on I began to ask God to allow me to become a missionary doctor who could help the injured and dying and give them the opportunity to hear and understand the good news of Jesus before it was too late." The Lord answered young David's prayers and many of his experiences are reported in his book.
Dr. Thompson intends this book for believers in the pews who desire to follow the Lord as best they can. He gives chapter and verse to show how Jesus helped the sick, the hungry, the homeless and the poor, but not just to bring peace and justice to this earth. He emphasizes the teachings and example of Jesus, explains them in modern terms, and makes them practical for today with real life stories from his thirty-five years as a missionary surgeon among the poor in Africa.
I read the Kindle version in one sitting because the author is a personal friend whose medical ministry has prolonged life for thousands and brought everlasting life to many of them as their bodies healed. My comments are based on my speedy read through in which I was shamed by the realization of my neglect in sharing my faith with people the Lord has put into my life. I think pastors and medical personal will latch on to other things which passed me by at first read.I plan to read this story again in print form so I can flip back to earlier pages as I am wont to do when something intrigues me.
Jesus taught and modeled the life we are to live because no amount of societal improvement can send a soul to heaven. Simply put, he left us but three commandments, which, when obeyed fully, would result in every man, woman and child living forever though their relationship with Jesus Christ.
We are commanded to love the Lord with all our hearts, to love our neighbors as ourselves, and to share the gospel with every person in the world. Physicians prolong lives for a time, but eventually every patient will die physically. Those who have given their lives to Jesus will live eternally with him. The others will suffer forever because we who knew the truth refused or neglected to share it.
Many of us believers find it hard to share the gospel so we neglect to do so. But only when we obey all three of these commandments will we be compassionate as Jesus was. If we truly love Him as we should, then we will also love those whom He loves. We will go to the ends of the Earth to find them, help them, and introduce them to him, no matter how hard it is, nor how costly it turns out to be. Our acts of mercy will not earn us a ticket to heaven. Jesus paid for that with his life. Our deeds toward those who need help are evidence that we have been born by the Holy Spirit of God.
Our fears convince us that talking about the gospel is Mission Impossible for us. It is. In our own strength! But we are not alone. We live and work by faith. We are empowered by the Holy Spirit who indwells all of us who have committed our lives to the Lord. He will enable us to do what we should, but we must take the initiative to befriend those people sent across our pathway by the Lord so we can tell them about Jesus.
Dr. Thompson reminds us in his book that the North American church, with all her money, armies of middle-class volunteers and organizations, cannot be the hope of the world. The hope of the world will forever be Jesus Christ. He concludes with this observation. "God has not called us to exhaust ourselves in a futile effort to save the world. He has called up to take his light to the world in power, mercy and love, proclaiming Jesus as we go. This is the truest mercy. This is Christian mercy."

Mission organizations should not forget mercy and justice

In this book, Dr. Thompson provides a strong argument against a common trend in Christian organizations and churches today. I am a missionary surgeon myself and know first hand that many missionary organizations no longer want to support medical missions and missionary hospitals. Instead, they only want church planting efforts in the 10-40 window. However, if Christ himself said that our heavenly father is concerned even about a sparrow, how much more for the suffering of human beings even if they are not in a 10-40 country; even if the Joshua Project designates them as a "saved" country. The thought of a woman and her baby both dying simply due to the lack of a simple C-section would be obscene in the United States. And yet many American Christian organizations now turn their backs on these suffering people. They only want non-medical, church planting missionaries who bring in the "numbers" of saved people. Do those numbers really mean anything? With Christ, it has always been personal. He cares about individuals. And at the heart of Christian medical missions, is the individual, suffering patient; a patient who needs both physical healing but also the saving gospel of Jesus Christ.

Insightful expose reminding believers of the primary goal of merciful acts

This book is a quick read, written by Dr David Thompson who spent over 30 yrs as a missionary physician in Gabon, Central Africa. Culling numerous examples from his personal experiences, Dr Thompson highlights the importance of keeping the gospel of Jesus Christ clear and central in all outreach activities. It serves also as a stark reminder of the church's role and responsibility in caring for the poor and disenfranchised.
Along with the central message, the author delves into the role of Divine Healing and deliverance from demonic possession (a topic uncomfortable to the Western mindset) in mission work.
Overall this book is illuminating, bold, scripturally balanced and highly recommended to all Christians involved in any form of outreach. If read with an open mind it will serve as a. Great blessing and a positive challenge to Christian workers. I highly recommend it to all who do short or long term medical missions
